David H. Brockington (1982 – 1987)
David Brockington made a substantial contribution to a number of different areas in British Columbia Rugby. As a player, he captained the North Shore All Blacks, the Club of which he ultimately became President, the last person to serve in this capacity for the All Blacks.
His refereeing career spanned eighteen years and he officiated at every level of Rugby in B. C. Administratively, he provided excellent leadership for three levels of Referees’ Societies. He was the President of the Vancouver/Fraser Valley Referees for two years, B.C.R.U. Chairman of Referees for two years ((1972 to 1974) and he was the inaugural President of the Canadian Referees Society. As a referee, David was appointed to officiate matches involving British Columbia and their opponents, visitors from Japan and Queensland.
David was involved, as well, in the leadership of the British Columbia Union, serving as its President for three years, 1979 through 1981. While holding this office, he represented B. C. on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Rugby Union and he, ultimately, was elected as the C.R.U. President, serving for five years, from 1982 to 1987. During his tenure, he accompanied the Canadian team to England, in 1983, and to Australia in 1985. It was in his final year of his holding this office that the inaugural Rugby World Cup, in New Zealand and Australia, was held and the Canadian team participated proudly in this competition.
Brockington, after many years of service for the Senior Unions, became very involved, as a social member both with the Brockton Oval group and with the Club which had evolved out of the North Shore All Blacks, along with the West Vancouver Barbarians, in 1969, the Capilano Rugby Football Club. He was intimately involved with the upgrading of both the Brockton Pavilion and the Capilano clubhouses. David was appointed as a Life Member of the Capilano Club and he was installed as an Honorary Patron of the Brockton Pavilion Society, in recognition of his service to both organizations.
A Championship trophy, the David Brockington Cup was created, in 1982, in his honor and this award goes, annually, to the winner of the B.C. Club, Under 18 competition.
In 1981, David Brockington was awarded the Jack Patterson Memorial Trophy, for outstanding contributions to the Game of Rugby in British Columbia.
