John Fyfe Smith (1929 – 1932)
Perhaps because of his long association with Rugby and cricket at the Vancouver Rowing Club, and being a successful businessman, Smith was elected inaugural president of the Rugby Union of Canada at its first convention, in Winnipeg, in 1929. He served for three years and went to Japan, in 1932, on Canada’s first overseas tour.
Smith came to Vancouver from Sydney, Australia, in 1904, when he joined the VRC. In addition to being an ardent cricket fan, he was a staunch supporter of rowing and Rugby when he wasn’t tending to his business interests. His company specialized in importing and exporting unique hardwoods. For his civilian service during World War 1, Smith was conferred with the Order of the British Empire by King George V.
