Wage Range: $85,000 - $95,000 per annum (commensurate with experience and qualifications); eligible for salary increases and discretionary, performance/results-based bonuses
Hours of work: 40 hrs/week; may be required to travel and work extended hours including weekends and evenings

OBJECTIVE OF ASSISTANT COACH, NATIONAL SENIOR MEN’S SEVENS TEAM
The Assistant Coach, National Senior Men’s Sevens (NSM7s) Team has a primary role to support the Head Coach, NSM7s Team to select and coach the NSM7s squad and team to prepare for and succeed on the World Stage (World Cup, Olympics, World Rugby Sevens Series, Pan Am Games, etc.). The position will have a very strong focus on athletic performance preparation, talent identification and development and the Assistant Coach will be responsible for leading talent identification and development for the NSM7s team.
ROLE OF ASSISTANT COACH, NSM7s TEAM
The Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach in selecting the NSM7s Squad and playing teams, in accordance with the guidelines adopted by Rugby Canada from time to time. The appointed person will coach the team, on and off the field, to a standard of excellence, with the objectives to demonstrate a significant improvement over each annual period of centralization, and enhance the reputation of Canadian rugby and the NSM7s Team.
The position will involve a commitment to aspects of high performance player development and talent identification. This position will focus upon the progression of identified players from club, school and/or university participation into Rugby Canada’s national and international level programs.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND PRIORITIES
The Assistant Coach will be responsible for supporting the Head Coach by performing the following roles and/or delivering the following outcomes.
- Leadership
- Squad and Team Selection and Preparation
- Lead Athletic Preparation
- Program Management and Delivery
- Talent Identification and Development
- Player Development, Monitoring and Appraisal
- Other tasks and accountabilities
Key Accountabilities
1. Leadership
- Supports the Head Coach in establishing a team vision and team values, standards and protocols that fit within the goals of Rugby Canada
- Supports the delivery of a shared understanding and adoption of the team vision, values, standards and protocols by all Team and Team Management members
- Models Rugby Canada and team values, standards and protocols at all times
- Demonstrates effective interpersonal communication and the ability to address difficult problems and decisions appropriately
- Builds and maintains strong working relationships with the Team and Team Management, both individually and as a group, using a range of communication styles and media tailored to the individual and the message
- Provides selection and coaching input to the National Senior Men’s 7s (NSM7s) program.
- Demonstrates personal credibility, honesty, high integrity, and shows an ability to handle pressure and stress appropriately
2. Squad and Team Selection and Preparation
- Assists the Head Coach to identify all players in contention for selection for the NSM7s Team, through utilization of a national selection network.
- As directed by the Head Coach, monitors and assesses the performance of all players in contention for selection, including consultation with Provincial and Regional Coaches, University or Club Coaches, and other Rugby Canada Coaches, and provides such player assessment information to Rugby Canada as requested from time to time
- Assists the Head Coach to select a squad of players for the NSM7s Team in accordance with the selection policies, protocols and process as determined and advised by Rugby Canada
- Maintains discretion and confidentiality regarding Squad and Team selection consideration, including discussions with players about their performance and not making any promises or guarantees of selection to any player.
3. Athletic Preparation
- Leads the athletic preparation of the entire NSM7s squad coordinating and facilitating a comprehensive, structured strength and conditioning programme
- Manages NSM7s strength and conditioning staff
- Ensures that standards are communicated to Rugby Canada talent identification staff and volunteers, Provincial Unions and Age-Grade National team coaches, and strength and conditioning coaches
- Ensures a collaborative approach is taken in the planning and preparation of all Men’s national team players based at the Centre of Excellence
- Ensures return-to-play protocols are adhered to and relevant staff are appropriately monitored throughout the player rehabilitation process
4. Program Management and Delivery
- Assists the Head Coach in the preparation of a comprehensive selection plan, and a periodised coaching and fitness training programme for the team
- Fully utilises all available technologies to analyse, understand and develop individual and team performance
- Conducts in–depth analysis of individual players, the team and the opposition
- Assists the Head Coach to develop appropriate game plans, reviews and measures individual and team performance against these plans
- Remains up to date with modern game development, including new laws and their impact on the game
- Provides technical and tactical coaching to individual players, mini-units and the team as a whole as appropriate
- Uses and facilitates the use of technical specialist coaches where required
- Develops well structured training sessions that provide team progressions, as relevant to the assigned responsibilities, most notably athletic performance
5. Talent Identification and Development
- In conjunction with the Head Coach, develops a plan for talent identification that will provide players for the NSM7s team in future years
- Develops and utilizes a national network of selectors and talent spotters for the purpose of identifying talent
- Attends talent identification opportunities such as competitions, tournaments, fixtures and talent combines. Where required, drives the establishment and delivery of appropriate opportunities in conjunction with Provincial Unions
- Optimizes any talent identification processes to also identify players in contention for selection to other national teams and ensures that any such players are identified to the Head Coach of the respective team for consideration
- Fulfills coaching roles with other Rugby Canada national teams as required from time to time in the interests of developing and identifying players for the NSM7s Team
- Explores non-conventional avenues for talent identification, including actively seeking out and attracting talent transfer athletes to rugby
- Ensures identified talent transfer athletes are actively integrated into Rugby Canada programs (centralized or decentralized) to accelerate their development
6. Player Development, Monitoring and Appraisal
- Undertakes and records player performance expectations with each player before the campaign
- Monitors and assesses individual player performance and development, including use of rugby analysis tools
- Provides regular performance and development review feedback to each player with reference to match analysis information
- In conjunction with the Head Coach, completes and records player performance reviews with each player at the end of the campaign, and provides to Rugby Canada a copy of each completed performance review document within 4 weeks of the end of the team’s program
- Encourage the development of player’s leadership and self reliance qualities
7. Refereeing/Laws
- Keeps abreast of all game law changes and competition rules
- Supports the Head Coach to ensure that players have an understanding and respect for the laws of the game. Facilitates the appropriate application of these laws through effective and regular communication with players, referees and match officials
- Maintains sound, professional working relationships with referees and touch judges
- Ensures acceptance of referee decisions, and acknowledges constructive referee feedback received
8. Other Matters
- Contributes constructively to any review or policy work and administrative matters relating to the NSM7s Team selection protocols and process, the Team programme or other high performance matters, as requested by Rugby Canada
- Contributes meaningfully to the implementation of Rugby Canada High Performance strategies for the overall benefit of Canadian Rugby
- Adheres to Rugby Canada policies and procedures as outlined
- Contributes and adheres to any media policies developed by Rugby Canada
- Is available and responsive to media requirements and requests to comment on Team matters as agreed and where appropriate
- Acts in a positive, professional manner with the Media
- Develops and fosters positive professional relationships with media representatives
- Develops and fosters a positive and appropriate media profile for the NSM7s Team including participation in media activity such as interviews, photographic, filming and/or recording
- Facilitates and participates in promotional or commercial activities with sponsors as required by Rugby Canada
- Develops and fosters positive and accessible relationships with sponsors and ensures sponsors products are used appropriately
- Works with Rugby Canada commercial and fund raising personnel to understand and ensure that commercial obligations relating to the Team are met
- Assists the Head Coach to complete and submit an in-depth Coach’s campaign report to Rugby Canada within 4 weeks of the end of their Team’s campaign, covering all key aspects of the season, including:
- o monitoring of progress against team programme plan
- o appraisal of the selection process, Team Management, individual player appraisal
- o identified strengths and weaknesses of the season campaign, with recommendations for the future.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS
Education and Experience
- Proven experience and success coaching elite Sevens teams at professional and international level
- Experience in identifying and developing talent
- Demonstrated experience and success delivering strength and conditioning programming at national and international level, particularly with a Sevens World Series team
- Suitable coaching qualifications are essential
Key Competencies
- Knowledge and/or experience of National / International rugby, most notably with a Sevens World Series team
- A comprehensive understanding of long-term athlete development and monitoring, and rugby skill development
- Excellent organizational and planning skills
- Computer literacy especially with internet, spreadsheets, word processing and power point presentations
- Knowledge and understanding of marketing, communications and public relations
- Ability to speak French will be considered as a significant asset to the position
