MANAGER, MATCH OFFICIAL DEVELOPMENT

The Manager, Match Official Development will be responsible for referee development as well as the development and accreditation of other match officials. The role and performance of the Manager, Match Official Development is monitored in an on-going manner by the Match Official & Laws Advisory Panel. It is the responsibility of this person to continually liaise (i.e. both inform and consult) with members of this Panel and to schedule meetings on an as-required basis.
In addition to performing roles associated with Match Official management and development the role entails a responsibility to monitor the rugby content of all national competitions and tournaments. This requires a need to support the event staff member(s) who have been assigned to manage the infrastructure that surrounds these events.
Nathan Abdelnour is currently employed as Rugby Canada’s Referee Development Manager. Nathan’s position is based within Rugby Canada’s Centre of Excellence at Langford where his role will focus upon Referee recruitment, development and education. He will place an emphasis upon referee development, advancing the level of accreditation of provincial referees and the promotion of referee coaching. This role will entail co-operative development ventures with Provincial and regional Referee Societies across Canada as well as building relationships with IRB Educators and IRB Trainers of Educators within Canada and around the world.
Nathan is a National Panel level referee, an IRB accredited Coach of Match Officials and an accredited IRB Match Official Educator. He is a graduate of both Carleton University with a BA in Political Science (2009), and the University of Toronto with a B.ED (2011). He is a native of Ottawa who is bilingual and has spent time as a player and referee in France. Over the past several years he has served the Eastern Ontario Rugby Referee Society and Rugby Ontario in a number of administrative and leadership roles.
Nathan comes to this role with a background in management, personnel development and supervisory roles in education and, more recently, in industry. Beyond Rugby, he has a keen interest in politics and is in possession of a Private Pilot’s License that he gained in 2008.
