December Recap

December Recap

Moira Bryan

The Wolves went 4-1-0-0 in December to end the year strong and give themselves solid footing heading into the final stretch of the season before playoffs.

#23 Hailey Losing

The Wolves hosted the Calgary Titans on Sunday, December 1. Midway through the first period, the Titans opened the scoring with a slot shot that beat the Wolves goaltender and would remain the only goal of the period, with the Titans leading after one. Both teams battled hard through the second until #14 Logan Basterash found a puck in the crease and slid it home to tie the game. Just over two minutes later, Basterash scored her second of the game on the power play to give the Wolves the lead. In the third period, #23 Hailey Losing scored with six minutes left in the game to put the Wolves up by two. Later in the period, Losing scored her second of the game to seal the deal for the Wolves! #30 Brooke Fawcett made 13 saves in the win.

#14 Logan Basterash

On Friday, December 6, the Wolves headed out to Ardrossan for a late game vs. the Sherwood Park Steele. #22 Brenna Reid opened the scoring for the Wolves three and a half minutes into the game. Later in the period, #91 Sydney Rusel scored for the Wolves to put them up by two. Both teams traded chances back and forth through the second period but the Wolves remained up 2-0 on the Steele. Early in the third, #11 Sydney Dutertre scored to give the Wolves some cushion on their lead. The Steele had numerous chances but could not capitalize, and Fawcett was stellar in net, turning away all 27 shots faced to give the Wolves a 3-0 win!

#91 Sydney Rusel

The Wolves hosted the Central Alberta Amazons on Sunday, December 8 at Castledowns. The Wolves got the first goal midway through the first period with a marker from #27 Megan Tipton. Later in the period, #13 Nicole Thomas doubled the Wolves' lead with a power play goal. Just fifteen seconds later, #19 Natalie Buttle found the back of the net with a quick rebound. Still later, #17 Julia Birmingham added to the Wolves side of the scoreboard. In the second, Rusel scored five minutes into the frame. Buttle added another tally on the power play. #4 Rory Bothwell also scored on another power play just minutes later. Later in the period, #16 Carolyne Lavoie potted one of her own. Buttle added yet another tally on the power play to complete the hattrick! Despite that, the Wolves weren't done yet. Just over two minutes into the third, Bothwell potted her second goal of the game. Perhaps inspired by Buttle, she went on to pot her third just four minutes later, to complete HER hattrick! Later in the period, the Amazons finally put one past the Wolves netminder on the power play, ruining any shutout dreams. To cap it off, Buttle scored her fourth on the power play with three minutes left in the game. #31 Paige Thomas made 13 saves in the 12-1 win!

#19 Natalie Buttle

Following the absolute blitz of goals last weekend, the Wolves hosted the Fort Saskatchewan Fury on Saturday, December 14. The Fury were the first to break the goose egg tie with a goal late in the first period. Both teams traded chances back and forth but none were able to capitalize in the second. In the third, both teams battled hard, but both goalies stood strong. The Wolves pulled their goalie with two and a half minutes left, hoping to get on the board. The Fury boxed them out and did not let shots through, and the buzzer went with a 1-0 on the board for the Fury. P. Thomas stopped 15 shots in the loss.

#31 Paige Thomas

The next day, the Wolves headed out to Ardrossan to face off against the Steele. Midway through the first period, Bothwell opened the scoring for the Wolves. Later in the period, #3 Ainsley McCoy-Birk added to the Wolves lead. Starting the second, #9 Kessa Wasmuth scored a power play goal just 23 seconds into the period. Reid added another a minute and a half later. She was followed by N. Thomas on the power play again, just minutes later. Late in the period, Bothwell scored her second of the game. She was followed up by Birmingham scoring with less than a minute left in the frame. A bit over four minutes into the frame, Reid tallied her second of the game. Later in the period, #25 Maddie Butterfield scored on the power play to put the nail in the coffin. Fawcett stopped all 15 shots she faced to help the Wolves win 9-0!

#3 Ainsley McCoy-Birk

December was an easier schedule for the Wolves as they wound down into the holidays. We're taking time off to spend with our families, but we'll be back and ready to go in the New Year as the road to the playoffs really heats up!
