100 Career Games for Claudine Boucher

100 Career Games for Claudine Boucher

Moira Bryan

On Saturday, November 5, the Wolves captain Claudine Boucher laced up her skates and stepped onto the ice at the Nicholas Sheran Leisure Centre in Lethbridge for a regular season game against the Eagles for her 100th career game in the AJFHL and as a Wolf.

Boucher has played for the Wolves since 2018 when she joined the team as an underage player at the age of 17 rather than playing her final year of U18 minor hockey. She was selected in tryouts to play on the team for her defensive skills, puck-moving ability, and hard shot. In Boucher's first year on the team, the Wolves won the AJFHL championship. The following year, it looked like the Wolves were going to take another run at the championship but unfortunately their playoff run was cut short by the global pandemic. Boucher was awarded an A during her third year on the team, which was a season that consisted of four regular season games before it had to be shut down again due to the pandemic. Boucher emerged as one of the top blue liners on an already strong defensive squad during her fourth year on the Wolves. In January of that season, Boucher was awarded the captaincy when the previous team captain moved away for school. The Wolves were unsuccessful in their quest to be back-to-back champions when they lost playoffs in the second round to the now-ACAC team the Lakeland Rustlers. Boucher scored 5 goals and 8 assists for a total of 13 points in 21 games that season. In her fifth season with the team, Boucher increased her points-per-game average considerably, scoring 10 goals and 11 assists for a total of 21 points in 23 games. Unfortunately, the Wolves were swept in the first round of playoffs by the Amazons, who the Wolves had struggled with scoring against all year. Boucher is now in her final year on the Wolves as an overage player, and is hoping to lead them back to the championship in her sixth and final year.

Boucher emphasizes the fun part of hockey by making sure that everyone is having fun and enjoys coming to the rink. Wolves alumni and previous assistant captain Grace Flanagan says "I think she has created a wonderful team culture on the Wolves when it comes to making everyone feel included and valued as a member of the team. The amount she cared for others and her concern with everyone enjoying themselves is adorable and often overlooked by many." Boucher organizes and hosts many team building events for the Wolves and she puts in lots of work behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly. Assistant captain #6 Brooklyn Piebiak has similar things to say: "What she brings to the team as a captain is a reliable, loving friend who everyone knows will have their back, no matter what. [...] Having this environment on a team really sets us apart from the rest." While Boucher is at the heart of the team as a leader off the ice, she excels on the blue line as well. Assistant captain #15 Tyra Anderson says "I think she's got a dog in her, always goes hard in battles and wants to be the best she can be for her teammates at every game and practice." Assistant captain #18 Tessa Ross echoes Anderson's thoughts: "Doesn't give up, battles to the end, [she's] very open to feedback and genuinely wants to apply it to her game." Boucher is a strong defender and has a wicked-hard shot that opposing players are hesitant to block. "Her speed and strength going end to end, her sheer effort and drive on the ice is contagious and she leads by example for sure," says Flanagan.

For Boucher, her time on the Wolves has affected her fundamentally. "I have grown so much these past few years, being a part of the Pack has taught me hard work, responsibility, accountability, and mostly overall how to be a good teammate and leader." She values the team culture and the relationships that she has made above all else. "The best part of being a part of the Wolves has been the team culture and the lifelong friendships that I have made along the way. Our team culture is truly like no other I've been a part of before, everyone has respect and compassion for one another, and we are truly a family." Boucher has had a huge hand in creating that team culture of family and has put down deep roots, guaranteeing it lasts after she's gone.

Boucher still has half a season left of hockey and she's looking to lead her team back to the championship, where she hasn't been since her rookie year. Victory or not, Boucher has had a huge impact on this team over the past 6 years and she will leave a lasting legacy that will be felt through seasons to come.
