Round One of Playoffs

Round One of Playoffs

Moira Bryan

After dominating the league throughout the regular season, the Wolves found themselves in some hot water come playoffs. The Amazons were able to sweep the Wolves, winning the series 2-0 and eliminating the Wolves from the 2023 AJFHL Championship.

On Friday, Feb 17, the Wolves took to the ice for Game 1 of Round 1 at Bill Hunter Arena in Edmonton vs the Central Alberta Amazons. The Amazons quickly put themselves on the board just four minutes in to the first period, and the score remained 1-0 through the rest of the frame. In the second, #15 Tyra Anderson evened the game at one with a power play goal. Three minutes later, #11 Sydney Dutertre scored another on the power play to give the Wolves their first lead of the game through two periods. #22 Grace Flanagan increased the Wolves lead further, just minutes into the third. The Amazons, however, were able to answer back with a goal a couple of minutes later. Halfway through the period, the Amazons tied the game with a power play goal. The score remained tied 3-3 through the end of regulation. The Wolves dominated play in overtime, but the Amazons got a break and capitalized on it, winning the game 4-3. #31 Paige Thomas turned aside 19 of 23 shots.

The next day, the Wolves hopped on the bus down to Penhold to face-off against the Amazons in a do-or-die situation. Late in the first period, Flanagan scored on a breakaway and the Wolves opened the scoring for this one. In the second, the Amazons were able to tie it up and then take the lead with another goal just two minutes later. Anderson evened it out for the Wolves with a goal halfway through the second period. Late in the period, #7 Nayha Johal scored on the power play to give the Wolves the lead after two. Both teams battled hard through the third but the Wolves ran into some penalty trouble. The Amazons would capitalize on one of their many chances with a power play goal later in the third period. The score remained 3-3 to the end of regulation. In overtime, penalty trouble continued for the Wolves and the Amazons scored another power play goal halfway through overtime to seal the series in a sweep. Thomas stopped 14 of 18 shots.

Although the season ended unexpectedly in a disappointing way, the Wolves are proud of their performance through an amazing regular season. We thank all of the players, staff, officials, and fans that made our season possible, and we are looking forward to next season!
