Graduating Players and Scholarship Recipients

Graduating Players and Scholarship Recipients

Moira Bryan

As we are finished with our regular season we want to highlight our graduating players who have truly elevated the Pack. Our team would not be where we are right now without the contribution of these Wolves. We also want to highlight excellent achievements away from the rink, and give congratulations to all of our scholarship winners!

Scholarship Winners

Five members of the Wolfpack were announced the recipients of four scholarships earlier this week. The Friends of Alberta Junior Hockey Society Scholarships are awarded to players, game officials, and therapists who distinguish themselves in their pursuit of academic and athletic excellence.

Congratulations to #22 Grace Flanagan and our team trainer Emily Robbenhaur on receiving this award! Flanagan is in her fourth year of a BSc at Macewan University where she is studying nursing. Robbenhaur is in her third year of a BSc at the University of Alberta studying kinesiology.

Within the Friends of Alberta Junior Hockey Society Scholarships exist the Richard Warwick Memorial Scholarship for the applicant with the highest academic standing, and the Nickerson Family Memorial Scholarship in recognition of the significant volunteer contribution made by Dr. Ken Nickerson. Congratulations to #12 Jacqueline Cowling for receiving the Richard Warwick Memorial Scholarship, and to #4 Nicole Thomas for receiving the Nickerson Family Memorial Scholarship! Cowling is in her first year at the University of Alberta studying business. Thomas is in her third year of a BSc at the University of Alberta studying biochemistry with Honours.

The Alberta Junior Athletic Award recognizes and rewards junior athletes and provides an incentive for athletes to continue with their post-secondary education. Congratulations to #88 Talia Teliani for receiving this award! Teliani is in her fourth year at the University of Alberta, working towards completing a BSc Specialization degree in psychology.

Graduating Players

The Wolves are sad to see Pack members go, but are so happy to be able to recognize these graduating players and all that they have done for the team! #44 Abby Fonteyne, #27 Ella Sopcak, and Teliani will all be leaving at the end of the season. Additionally, #17 Bree Edwards, #2 Myah Mindus, #13 Moira Bryan, and Flanagan are all overage players who are finishing off their last season of junior hockey.

#44 Abby Fonteyne

Fonteyne became a part of the Pack last season and has played a huge role on the back end ever since. She is an incredibly reliable and great defender who has truly never had a bad game.

Fonteyne will be graduating in the spring with her Elementary Education Degree from the University of Alberta. She hopes to get a job teaching in the Edmonton area, or maybe teach abroad in Australia or New Zealand.

“I’ve loved everything about being a wolf, being a part of this team has been so special for me and I loved coming to the rink and playing with some amazing people.” -Abby

#27 Ella Sopcak

Sopcak joined the Wolves in January of 2019 and is one of the loveliest people we know. She always has many kind words to say and uplifts everyone with her positivity and friendship, on and off the ice.

She has graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from MacEwan this past December. Sopcak plans to travel Europe in the spring and start her career as a Labour and Delivery Nurse here in Edmonton.

“What I loved so much about being part of the Wolves was how much of a tight knit group we always have been, and how the team really became like my second family. I feel very lucky to have been able to make some lifelong friendships and be part of such an incredible group of women for the past 4 (and a half) years” -Ella

#88 Talia Teliani

This upcoming fall Teliani hopes to begin the Doctor of Optometry Program in the US. She will continue to play for the Lebanese Women’s National Team and will be joining them in future tournaments in France, Dubai and Malaysia.

“I have had the privilege of playing with the Wolves for the past five years and I am sad that my time with the team has come to an end. I have absolutely loved playing with this incredible group over the years and I'm very fortunate to have had the best teammates and coaching staff. The Wolves have truly become like a second family to me and I've made some lifelong friends along the way. I'm going to miss my Wolves family greatly and the memories I've made will forever be cherished” -Talia.

#17 Bree Edwards

Edwards joined the Wolves last season and has been an unstoppable force ever since. She leads the team in goals and points, and was awarded Most Outstanding Forward for putting up similar numbers last season and for being a reliable player defensively on penalty kill, as well as offensively on power play. Her commitment level is unparalleled as she drives 2 hours to Edmonton from Athabasca for every practice, game and team event.

Edwards hopes to pick up coaching a team in Athabasca in the future, while taking some classes at Athabasca University. She wants to continue being active with snowboarding, hiking and mountain biking. Edwards also has a doggy bandana business Breezy K9 Creations and is looking to start selling in farmers markets!

“Being a Wolf the past few years has taught me to have fun again and fall back in love with hockey. Its brought me a family of new friends and experiences that I will miss so much. Its brought me back with girls I grew up playing the sport with and allowed me to reconnect.” -Bree

#2 Myah Mindus

Mindus became a member of the pack in 2020. From being reliable in the defensive zone to stepping up with the rush, she made a difference all over the ice. Her positive attitude and energy was contagious and she played a big role in keeping team spirits lifted on the bench and in the dressing room.

This spring, Mindus will be graduating from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Arts Major in Psychology and Minor in Sociology. She has also applied to the Funeral Services Program at Mount Royal University, and will be moving to St. Paul to complete her practicum at Grace Gardens Funeral Home. In the future, Mindus will continue playing the sport she loves in a beer league with some friends.

“Being a Wolf has meant a lot of laughs, a second family, friendships that will last a lifetime, a heck of a lot of fun and hard work. I will miss playing for these girls in our coaches and will cherish the memories that came with being a Wolf. I'd like to thank my Wolf family for making saying goodbye to the game we all love so much so hard.” -Myah

#13 Moira Bryan

Bryan joined the pack in 2020 and last season she was awarded the Most Valuable Player Award. She has been one of the most uplifting teammates the Pack has had and she always made sure everyone was having fun. Her ability to play forward and defence has been incredibly valuable to the team. Bryan's handwork also has never goes unnoticed, especially while screening shots and winning battles in the corners. Her positive attitude and goofy energy never failed to get the team pumped up and ready before games.

Bryan hopes to graduate in the next couple of years from the University of Alberta, and will continue working. She wants to stay active by joining a senior hockey team and she plans on taking a coaching course and getting into some coaching.

“Playing for the Wolves has been the best way to cap off my competitive hockey career, for the lifelong friendships I've made, to experiences had with the team, I'll cherish these few years spent with the Pack for the rest of my life.” -Moira

“I have loved being a part of the Wolves. The 5ish (Covid) seasons I got to play or some of the fondest hockey memories I have. No matter what was going on at school or in my personal life I always knew I had a family waiting at the rink to make my day better. I've been fortunate to play with some great players and meet some amazing people. I would like to thank the coaches and staff for organizing everything and for continuing to make hockey fun for me.
