February Recap

February Recap

Wolves Staff

The Wolves finished off the regular season in February with three games against the three other teams in the North Division. They went 3-0-0 and are your 2022-23 AJFHL regular season league champions, with a record of 23-2-2, 68 points, and a win percentage of .840!

The Wolves faced off against the Sherwood Park Steele on Friday, Feb 3, in Ardrossan at 8:45 pm. The Steele quickly opened the scoring two minutes in to the game. The Wolves wouldn't stay down for long and #3 Ainsley McCoy-Birk tied the game just three minutes later. The first period ended with the game tied at one. In the second period, #22 Grace Flanagan scored on the power play to give the Wolves their first lead of the game. Later, #17 Bree Edwards scored another on the power play with two minutes left in the period to increase the Wolves' lead heading into the third. Both teams battled hard through the first half of the period, but the Steele were able to put one in with eight minutes left in the game. Flanagan scored another on the power play with less than four minutes left in the game, decreasing the Steele's comeback chances. The Steele were able to score one more with less than a minute left, but the Wolves held out to get the win! Goaltender #31 Paige Thomas turned away 13 of 16 shots to get the 4-3 win!

On Sunday, Feb 5, the Wolves hosted their Senior Night at Castledowns Rec Centre at 6 pm before their last home game against the Central Alberta Amazons. They honoured seven graduating players and their contributions to the team. The game got off to a slow start after some technical difficulties. Both teams battled hard through the first but the score remained goose eggs on both sides after one period of play. The Amazons opened the scoring three minutes in to the second period. The Wolves battled hard to even the game throughout the rest of the period, and finally #88 Talia Teliani scored on the power play with just five seconds left in the period to tie the game after two. Both goalies played well through the third period and the puck stayed out of the nets at either end, until #15 Tyra Anderson scored with two and a half minutes left. #30 Andrea Peric stopped 15 of 16 shots to help the Wolves win 2-1!

For their last game of the regular season, the Wolves headed out of town to face off against the Fort Saskatchewan Fury on Saturday, Feb 11 at 7:30 pm. The Wolves opened the scoring for the first time this month, with a goal from #7 Nayha Johal. In the second, Teliani scored four minutes in to increase the Wolves' lead. Later in the period, #25 Rory Bothwell scored a tip-in off of a shot from the point. The Wolves led 3-0 going into the third period. Edwards opened the scoring in the third with a goal just thirty seconds into the period. The Wolves went on to score one more goal from #24 Kate Macpherson to win the game 5-0! Thomas stopped all 23 shots she faced to cap off the regular season with a shutout.

The Wolves are aiming to continue their game into playoffs and work towards the same successes they had in the regular season. The road to the championship starts on Friday, Feb 17 at Bill Hunter Arena versus the Amazons at 7:45 pm. We hope to see you there!
