January Recap

Moira Bryan

The Wolves had a busy schedule in January and were on the road a lot, but ultimately went 5-1-0 to clinch first place in the North Division.

On Saturday, January 6, the Wolves hosted the Central Alberta Amazons at home. The Wolves opened the scoring six minutes into the game with a goal from #4 Rory Bothwell. Later in the period, #27 Megan Tipton added another for the Wolves, and then #19 Natalie Buttle scored with less than a minute left to give the Wolves a three goal lead after the first period. The Amazons answered back with a goal of their own less than five minutes into the middle frame. The Wolves answered back soon after with a goal from #15 Tyra Anderson. A couple of minutes later, #7 Nayha Johal scored another for the Wolves, and then two more followed after that from #14 Logan Basterash and #25 Maddie Butterfield to close out the period. Both teams battled hard through the third period but both goaltenders shut the door, and the final score remained 7-1! #31 Paige Thomas made three saves in the win.

#4 Rory Bothwell

The next weekend, on Saturday, January 13, the Wolves hopped on the bus and headed down to face off against the #1 team in the South - the Cochrane Chaos. The Chaos quickly opened the scoring with a goal a little over a minute into the game. Just a minute later, #24 Kate Macpherson tied the game at one. In the second period, #11 Sydney Dutertre gave the Wolves their first lead of the game with a power play goal. Later in the period, Johal scored to increase the Wolves' lead. Unfortunately for both teams, the power went out in the arena during the second intermission. After about 20 minutes of attempting to restore power, it was determined that the power would not be able to be restored quickly enough for the game to continue. Therefore, the game was concluded and the Wolves won 3-1! #29 Havana Batke made 20 saves through 40 mins of play.

#11 Sydney Dutertre

On Saturday, January 20, the Wolves went on the road again and travelled to Penhold to play the Amazons. This time, the Amazons were the ones to open the scoring about midway through the first period. Later in the period, the Wolves answered back when #9 Kiera Mulder put the puck past the Amazons goaltender for her first AJFHL goal! The Wolves took the lead midway through the second period with a power play goal from Buttle. Just 30 seconds later, Anderson scored to increase the Wolves' lead. In the third, the Amazons cut the Wolves' lead down to one with another goal. Play continued through the third period until the Amazons pulled their goalie with a minute left. #22 Brenna Reid scored an empty net goal to end the game. P. Thomas turned away 18 of 20 shots to help the Wolves win 4-2!

The next day, on Sunday January 21, the Wolves hosted the Fort Saskatchewan Fury for their annual Hockey Fights Cancer game. There was a ceremonial puck drop, an anthem singer, and a donation box with proceeds going towards the HFC Assist program through the Canadian Cancer Society. The Wolves raised $1,015 for cancer at this game, thank you to everyone who came and supported!

The Wolves quickly opened the scoring with a goal from Bothwell just over a minute into the first period. #3 Ainsley McCoy-Birk followed that up with two goals of her own, five minutes apart from each other. Thirty seconds later, Anderson added a goal, increasing the Wolves' lead further. The Fury was able to get on the board later in the period with their first goal of the game. In the second period, the Wolves resumed their scoring flurry eight minutes in to the period with a goal from #13 Nicole Thomas. Minutes later, McCoy-Birk tipped a shot in for her third goal of the game and first AJFHL hattrick! Later in the period, other Wolves' goals came from #17 Julia Birmingham and #88 Chloe Johnson. The Fury scored again midway through the third period. Tipton added a goal for the Wolves just a minute after that, and then Bothwell scored again a couple of minutes later. The Fury would score again before the period was over, but their chances for a come back were over, and P. Thomas made 20 saves to help the Wolves win 10-3!

#88 Chloe Johnson

The next weekend, on Saturday, January 27, the Wolves were on the road again as they headed down to Diamond Valley to face off against the Foothills Storm. Both teams battled hard through the first period but both goaltenders shut out the first period. The Storm opened the scoring in the game with a short-handed goal just 40 seconds into the second period. Just a minute and a half later, #10 Brigitte Hetu scored for the Wolves and tied the game at one. Towards the end of the period, the Storm were awarded a penalty shot, and they capitalized on that opportunity with a goal to give themselves the lead again. Late in the third period, the Wolves pulled their goalie in order to tie the game, but the Storm were able to finish the game off with an empty net goal. Batke turned aside 21 of 23 shots in the 3-1 loss.

#10 Brigitte Hetu

On Sunday, January 28, the Wolves hosted the Amazons at Castledowns for the third game against them this month. The Wolves opened the scoring with three minutes left in the first period with a power play goal from Dutertre. The Amazons answered back in the second period and tied the game 1-1. The Wolves regained their lead a minute later with a goal from #18 Tessa Ross. Later in the period, Macpherson added another for the Wolves to increase their lead to two. In the third period, Dutertre got her second of the game, and just a minute and a half later, Hetu also scored. Batke made 17 saves to help the Wolves win 5-1!

#24 Kate Macpherson

With all the wins this month, the Wolves clinched first place in the North Division! They only have three regular season games left before playoffs. The Wolves are hoping to win the league for the second year in a row and are gearing up for playoffs, which start February 17. We hope to see you there!
