November Recap

November Recap

Moira Bryan

November was a month of highs and lows for the Wolves as they rose to capture first place in the league, but also ended their undefeated streak with their first loss of the season, going 5-2-0 through the month.

#16 Carolyne Lavoie

On Saturday, November 5, the Wolves hopped on the bus and headed down to Lethbridge for the first of a set of back-to-back games against the Eagles. The Wolves opened the scoring just 16 seconds into the game when, fittingly, #16 Carolyne Lavoie beat the Eagles goalie on the first shot of the game. #6 Brooklyn Piebiak put the Wolves up by two halfway through the period. The Eagles were able to get on the board with five minutes left in the period. Before the period was over, #44 Chloe Johnson put the Wolves back up by two with her first AJFHL goal! Both teams battled hard through the second period but the goalies stood strong and neither team was able to score. In the third, the Eagles scored another with five minutes left, but the Wolves defence held strong and goaltender #29 Havana Batke made 16 saves to aid the Wolves in a 3-2 win! This was also #5 Claudine Boucher's 100th game in the AJFHL and as a Wolf!

#88 Chloe Johnson

The next day, the Wolves returned to the Nicholas Sheran arena in Lethbridge for their second game of the weekend against the Eagles. Unlike Saturday's game, there were no goals scored right away and in fact, no goals at all through the first period as both teams tried to gain the upper hand with the first lead. The Eagles took a penalty right at the end of the first period so the Wolves started the second period on a power play. However, the Eagles were able to press hard enough that the first goal of the game came shorthanded, just 30 seconds into the second period. Later in the period on the power play, the Eagles scored again to advance their lead by two. The Wolves finally got on the board halfway through the third period with a goal from #19 Natalie Buttle. Four minutes later, #15 Tyra Anderson scored again for the Wolves to tie the game. The tie couldn't be settled during regulation and so the game headed to overtime. Overtime was a back and forth affair with both teams getting good chances. The Eagles finally ended the game with just 11 seconds left in overtime by scoring a goal on a breakaway. #31 Paige Thomas turned away 15 shots but the Wolves were unable to win the game.

#15 Tyra Anderson

On Friday, November 10, the Wolves headed out to Ardrossan for an evening game against the Sherwood Park Steele. The Steele got on the board first with a goal just five minutes into the opening frame. Later in the period and on the power play, the Steele scored another goal to put themselves up by two. The Wolves finally got on the board mid-way through the second period with a power play goal from #22 Brenna Reid. The Wolves pressed hard in the third period, getting 15 shots on net but the Steele net minder stood strong and the Steele added an empty net goal at the end. Batke made 4 saves in a 3-1 loss.

#12 Jacqueline Cowling

On Sunday, November 12, the Wolves headed out to Fort Saskatchewan to take on the Fury. The Wolves quickly scored three minutes in with a goal from Johnson, quickly followed up with goals from #4 Rory Bothwell and #13 Nicole Thomas to establish a strong lead. Midway through the period, #12 Jacqueline Cowling added another for the Wolves, followed a minute later with a goal from #7 Nayha Johal, and another minute later, a goal from #27 Megan Tipton. The Fury were finally able to get on the board when they scored a goal with five minutes left in the first period. The Wolves kept increasing their lead in the second period. Bothwell scored the first goal of the period at the 19 minute mark. #24 Kate Macpherson added a goal three minutes later. Past the midway mark, #10 Brigitte Hetu scored on the power play, then Buttle added another for the Wolves. The Fury opened the scoring in the third with a goal three minutes in to the final frame. Buttle scored her second of the game later in the period. #5 Claudine Boucher put the final nail in the coffin with a power play goal scored with just 15 seconds left in the game. Thomas turned aside 18 of 20 shots to help the Wolves win 12-2!

#24 Kate Macpherson

The following weekend on Saturday November 18, the Wolves were looking for redemption as they hosted the Sherwood Park Steele at home. Midway through the first period, the Wolves struck first with a goal from #11 Sydney Dutertre. Just 15 seconds later, Boucher added another to increase the Wolves lead to two. The Steele were able to get on the board in the second period with a goal coming six minutes in. Both teams battled hard through the third but the Wolves were not able to increase their lead and played solid defence until the end. Batke stopped 23 shots to help the Wolves win 2-1!

#11 Sydney Dutertre

The next weekend, the Wolves hosted the Cochrane Chaos on Saturday November 25 in their first matchup of the season. Hetu scored just one and a half minutes into the game to give the Wolves a quick lead. Later in the period, the Chaos added one of their own to tie the game at one. With two minutes left in the period, #15 Tyra Anderson scored to give the Wolves the lead again heading into the first intermission. Both teams battled hard through the second period until #14 Logan Basterash beat the Chaos net minder on the power play. Reid scored a short handed goal with just 21 seconds left in the second to increase the Wolves' lead further. Similarly to the second period, the first ten minutes of the third period were goalless for either team. Thomas scored for the Wolves later in the final frame, and then #17 Julia Birmingham scored an empty netter that was also short handed in the last minute of the game and for her first AJFHL goal! Batke turned away 29 of 30 shots for a 6-1 win!

#17 Julia Birmingham

On Sunday, November 26, the Wolves headed out to Ardrossan for the second time this month to play the Steele for the third time in three weeks. The Wolves got on the board quickly with a goal from #25 Maddie Butterfield four minutes into the opening frame. The Steele answered back with a tying goal just thirty seconds later, and the score remained until the end of the first period. Following a scoreless 15 minutes in the bottom of the first period, the second period remained as such as both teams battled hard to take a lead, but to no avail. The Wolves were finally able to get the upper hand on a goal from N. Thomas five minutes into the third period. With four minutes left in the game, Piebiak scored on the power play to increase the Wolves' lead to two. P. Thomas stopped 15 shots to give the Wolves a 3-1 win!

#6 Brooklyn Piebiak

Following a heavy November game schedule, the Wolves are looking forward to a more relaxing December schedule with only one game per weekend and only three games in the month. The Wolves have passed the halfway mark of the season with the majority of their games being played in October and November, and are spreading starting to look forward to playoffs in February.
