November Recap

November Recap

Moira Bryan

The Wolves put distance between themselves and second place in the North as they went undefeated through the month of November.

#16 Carolyne Lavoie

On Saturday, November 2, the Wolves headed down to Penhold to face off against the Central Alberta Amazons. Midway through the first period, #10 Brigitte Hetu opened the scoring with a power play goal for the Wolves. In the second, #13 Nicole Thomas increased the Wolves lead just two minutes in. 45 seconds later, #17 Julia Birmingham scored to put the Wolves up 3-0. Towards the end of the period, #22 Brenna Reid scored, then #16 Carolyne Lavoie potted another to give the Wolves a big cushion heading into the final frame. N. Thomas got her second of the game on the power play just a few minutes into the third. The Amazons were finally able to answer back with a goal, then they followed up with another on the power play. It wouldn't be enough, however, as #4 Rory Bothwell scored the final goal late in the game. #30 Brooke Fawcett made 9 saves in the 7-2 win.

#30 Brooke Fawcett

The Wolves hosted the Sherwood Park Steele at Castledowns on Sunday, November 3. Reid opened the scoring with a tally for the Wolves just three minutes into the game. #7 Nayha Johal followed it up with one of her own just a few minutes later. Later in the period, #18 Bella Morin scored a goal on the power play that blasted into the net from the point. Just 40 seconds later, #23 Hailey Losing scored for her first AJFHL goal! The Wolves kept the momentum heading into the second with a goal just over a minute in from #88 Chloe Johnson. That momentum did not last as both teams stayed off the scoresheet for the rest of the period. In the third, #11 Sydney Dutertre added a tally, followed by #12 Jacqueline Cowling and #19 Natalie Buttle, a minute apart and both on the power play. #31 Paige Thomas stopped every shot she faced for an 8-0 shutout!

#23 Hailey Losing

Following a nice long break with a bye weekend and fall break for students, the Wolves got back in the bus on Saturday, November 16 and headed down to Calgary to take on the Titans. Both teams battled hard through the first but not hard enough to score any goals, so the score remained 0-0 after one. Midway through the second, Bothwell broke the stalemate with a goal on the power play. The Titans were finally able to break through with a goal nineteen seconds before the end of the second. Midway through the third, the Titans scored again to put themselves ahead this time for their first lead of the game. With just two minutes left and on the power play with the extra attacker out, Dutertre tied the game when she found a loose rebound to send the game to overtime. The Wolves went back on the power play again, late in overtime, and with twenty seconds left, Buttle scored to win the game! Fawcett turned aside 19 shots in the 3-2 win.

#11 Sydney Dutertre

The next weekend on Saturday, November 23, the Wolves faced off against the Fort Saskatchewan Fury at Dow Centennial Centre. Reid opened the scoring three minutes into the game with a power play goal. Following in her footsteps, both Lavoie and then Morin proceeded to score power play goals of their own. Later in the period, Dutertre scored - even strength this time - and #9 Kessa Wasmuth followed it up with another in the last two minutes of the first. Reid again opened the scoring in the second with another power play goal. Just a minute later, the Fury was able to finally get on the board with a power play goal of their own. In the third, the Fury tallied another on the power play. Later in the period, Losing put one up on the Wolves side of the board, then Johnson added another. At the end of the game with the Wolves down a player, Reid scored a short handed goal with one second left to complete the hattrick! Fawcett made 30 saves in the 9-2 win!

#22 Brenna Reid

On Sunday, November 24, the Wolves hosted the Lethbridge Eagles at Castledowns Rec Centre. Midway through the first period, Johal opened the scoring for the Wolves with a power play goal. The Eagles answered back with a goal of their own to tie the game. Birmingham put up one for the Wolves to give them back the lead. Towards the end of the period, Hetu added a power play goal to increase the lead, and then Birmingham added another on the power play just a minute later. The Wolves sat back on their heels a bit in the second period after the barrage of goals in the first. Later in the period, #3 Ainsley McCoy Birk scored the lone goal of the frame for the Wolves. Lavoie quickly opened the scoring less than two minutes in with a goal. The Eagles were able to answer back with a tally of their own, then another on the power play. Birmingham potted yet another for her first AJFHL hattrick! Bothwell added a goal of her own to seal the game. P. Thomas turned aside 17 shots to help the Wolves win 8-3!

#17 Julia Birmingham

The Wolves headed back to Penhold on Saturday, November 30 to take on the Amazons. The Wolves put on a one-woman show as N. Thomas scored on the power play midway through the first, then tallied another power play marker five minutes later. In the second Buttle scored midway through the frame to increase the Wolves' lead. The Amazons were able to get on the board halfway through the third with a power play goal of their own. The Wolves answered back within a minute with a goal from Cowling. Later, Birmingham added a tally of her own, then N. Thomas potted one in the last minute of the game to complete the hattrick! P. Thomas made 21 saves in the 6-1 win.

#13 Nicole Thomas

The Wolves spent a lot of time on the road in November but remained undefeated through the month. Nearing the halfway point of the season, they have nearly run away with the top spot in the North Division and continue to battle the Cochrane Chaos in the South for first place in the league.
