Round One of Playoffs

Round One of Playoffs

Moira Bryan

The Wolves swept the Central Alberta Amazons in two games to win the first round of playoffs and advance to the second round!

On Saturday, February 17, the Wolves hosted the Amazons at Castledowns for Game 1 of Round 1 of playoffs. The first goal of the 2024 playoffs (for the Wolves) came three minutes into the game and on the power play from #18 Tessa Ross. Later in the period, #14 Logan Basterash scored a power play goal to increase the Wolves' lead. Before the period was over, #4 Rory Bothwell scored with just forty seconds left to close out the period. In the second period, #22 Brenna Reid opened the scoring one minute into the second with a goal, then #3 Ainsley McCoy-Birk scored just over a minute later to increase the Wolves' lead. Later in the period, the Amazons had a delayed penalty so the Wolves pulled their goalie to add an extra attacker. A pass came to the defence on the blue line from the forward in the corner, but the defence missed the pass and it rolled all the way down the length of the ice and into the Wolves' empty net! The officials needed to take a moment to figure out who was the last Amazon that touched the puck in order to be able to credit them with the goal! Late in the period, with 20 seconds left, #16 Carolyne Lavoie added another goal to the Wolves' lead. Late in the third period with less than five minutes left, #19 Natalie Buttle scored a tally for the Wolves. Then, with less than a minute left in the game #11 Sydney Dutertre added a shorthanded goal of her own. #31 Paige Thomas stopped all 12 shots that she faced to get a shutout (even though there was a goal against on the scoreboard!), and help the Wolves win Game 1 8-1!

#14 Logan Basterash

The next day, the Wolves hopped on the bus and headed down to Innisfail for Game 2 of Round 1. The Amazons were in a do or die situation and were able to hold the Wolves off of the scoresheet through the first period, leaving the score 0-0 after one. The Wolves opened the scoring seven minutes into the second period when #13 Nicole Thomas put the puck past the Amazons netminder. Reid followed up with a goal just two minutes later to put the Wolves up by two. A minute after that, #24 Kate Macpherson scored to increase the Wolves' lead. Another minute later, Reid got her second of the game on a short-handed breakaway goal. In the third period, the Amazons were able to break their own goose egg with a goal at the halfway point of the period. Later, on the powerplay, Reid scored her third of the game for a hattrick! #29 Havana Batke turned aside 23 shots to help the Wolves win the game 5-1 and sweep the series 2-0!

#13 Nicole Thomas

The Wolves are back in action on Sunday, February 25, at Castledowns where they will take on the Sherwood Park Steele in Round 2, for the North Championships. We hope to see you there!
