Year End Banquet and Award Winners

Year End Banquet and Award Winners

Moira Bryan

The Wolves hosted their year end banquet on April 13th, 2024 at the McKernan Hall. Players, staff, friends, and family were in attendance to celebrate the season and recognize individual and team successes. Dinner was provided by Pasta Brioni and was followed by the award presentation, the captains' awards, and a year end slideshow.

Award Recipients

Top Scorer

The Top Scorer Award went to #4 Rory Bothwell. This is awarded to the player with the most points in regular season league play. Bothwell played 22 games this year, scoring 13 goals and 16 assists for a total of 29 points, plus an additional 3 goals and 5 assists for a total of 8 points in 7 playoff games. With a 17-point improvement from last year's 12 points and two more games played, Bothwell took her game to a new level this season, more than doubling her point totals from last year. She came second in total points in the league and played a massive role in the Wolves' success this season.

Most Improved Player

The Most Improved Player Award went to #16 Carolyne Lavoie. This is awarded to the player that has exhibited the greatest growth in hockey skills, on-ice knowledge and overall performance throughout the season. Lavoie played 22 games this year, scoring 4 goals and 10 assists for a total of 14 points, plus an additional 6 goals and 2 assists for a total of 8 points in 6 playoff games. Lavoie was a red shirt last season and was a development player who played only 10 games. She came into this season ready to play and excelled along the boards and in front of the net. Lavoie played a big part in the Wolves' long playoff run, and scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway in Game 3 of the championship series to win the trophy for the team.

Rookie of the Year

The Rookie of the Year Award went to #25 Maddie Butterfield. This is awarded to the player selected as the most proficient in their first year of competition in the AJFHL. Butterfield played 21 games this year, scoring 7 goals and 11 assists for a total of 18 points, plus an additional 3 assists in 7 playoff games. Butterfield's work ethic is unmatched and she was always in the gritty areas along the boards and in front of the net digging pucks out. She slipped into different roles on different lines and always rose to the challenge and exceeded expectations.

Most Outstanding Forward

The Most Outstanding Forward Award went to #13 Nicole Thomas and #22 Brenna Reid. This is awarded to the most outstanding all-around forward(s) on the team. Thomas played 22 games this year, scoring 10 goals and 12 assists for a total of 22 points, plus an additional goal and assist to combine for 2 points in 7 playoff games. Thomas moved into the middle this year and flourished in the new role. Her hockey IQ, skill, and puck-moving ability were a big part of the Wolves success.

Reid played 22 games this year, scoring 12 goals and 9 assists for a total of 21 points, plus an additional 5 goals and 2 assists for a total of 7 points in 7 playoff games. Reid's speed and strength down the middle make her a formidable opponent. She stepped up even more in playoffs and was an important part of securing the championship win.

Most Outstanding Defenseman

The Most Outstanding Defenseman Award went to #18 Tessa Ross. This is awarded to the most outstanding all-around defenseman on the team. Ross played 21 games this season, scoring 1 goal and 6 assists for a total of 7 points, plus she added a goal through 7 playoff games. Ross could be counted on in all three zones and in any situation, getting shots through and generating offence, moving the puck quickly to transition through the neutral zone, and blocking shots and clearing out the front of the net. At the end of the third period if the Wolves needed a goal or needed to defend a close lead, Ross was likely on the ice or at the gate, ready to go out.

Wolves Award

The Wolves Award went to #3 Ainsley McCoy-Birk. This is awarded to the player who demonstrates the Wolves spirit of determination, character, teamwork, coachability, dedication and hard work. McCoy-Birk played 11 games this season, scoring 5 goals and 8 assists for a total of 13 points. McCoy-Birk hit the ice hard this season and amassed 7 points in 4 games when, in her 4th game of the season she fell awkwardly near the Wolves bench and broke her ankle. She came to every single practice, game, bus trip, and team event on crutches, in a boot, and eventually walking again, sitting on the bench at practice and in the stands during games, always cheering the loudest.

McCoy-Birk maintained the level of fitness needed to return to gameplay and returned mid-January, scoring a hattrick in just her second game back. Her hard work and dedication after what could have been a career-ending injury was an inspiration to the team. She was also awarded the Paige Peach Heart & Soul Award by the AJFHL for her perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.

Bill Porter Award

The Bill Porter Award went to #5 Claudine Boucher. This award is voted on by the players and given to the Wolves player that has provided positive social interaction, created friendships, demonstrated the character traits of hard work, honesty and shown desire for the team to improve & excel both on and off the ice. Boucher goes above and beyond her role as captain to create a friendly and welcoming environment, and she makes sure that everyone feels included and welcomed on to the team. This is the third year in a row that Boucher has won this award. Given the huge presence that she has had on this team for the past six years and to carry on her legacy, the award will hereby be renamed after her; the Claudine Boucher Award.

Most Valuable Player

The Most Valuable Player Award went to #5 Claudine Boucher. This award goes to the player whose contributions meant the most to the team. Boucher played 22 games this season, scoring 4 goals and 9 assists for a total of 13 points, and 2 assists through 7 playoff games. In her final year, Boucher led the Wolves to winning the championship, something that had not been done since her first year on the team. Since her first year, Boucher has put all of her effort and extra time into creating a family on the Wolves and elevating the team further every year. She truly embodies what it means to be a Wolf and will be missed by the players and coaching staff next year, and for years to come.

We want to thank the team, Wolves staff, friends, and family for making our awards night such a fun event! While these players were singled out for each of their accomplishments over the season, their successes would be diminished without the support and contributions of the entire Wolfpack. We are looking forward to tryouts at the end of August and seeing some new and familiar faces back for another wonderful season next year!
