February Recap

Moira Bryan

The Wolves finished off the season on a high note, going 3-0-0 in February and clinching the league title!

On Saturday, February 3, the Wolves hosted the Sherwood Park Steele in their last home game of the season. Prior to the puck drop, the team honoured their four graduating overage players - #5 Claudine Boucher, #18 Tessa Ross, #15 Tyra Anderson, and #8 Payden Bialowas - with speeches and flowers. The Wolves quickly opened the scoring in the game with a goal from #22 Brenna Reid just two minutes in. Reid then added a second goal five minutes later. Midway through the period and on the penalty kill, #25 Maddie Butterfield potted a short-handed goal off of a solo rush. The Wolves continued to press, with another goal coming from #7 Nayha Johal just 1.5 minutes later. With five minutes left in the period, #11 Sydney Dutertre scored a goal on the power play. Then just twenty seconds later, #9 Kiera Mulder scored to increase the Wolves' lead to 6-0 after just one period! The Wolves did not stop in the second period. Six minutes in, Reid scored again for her first AJFHL hattrick! A minute later, #16 Carolyne Lavoie scored, and then less than a minute after that, #3 Ainsley McCoy-Birk put herself on the scoresheet with a goal. The Wolves took a break for four minutes before #13 Nicole Thomas scored yet another for the Wolves. Later in the period, the Steele were finally able to break the goose egg on their side of the board by scoring a goal of their own. The Wolves slowed down quite a bit in the third period, with only one goal coming from #19 Natalie Buttle on the power play at the halfway mark. #29 Havana Batke turned aside 14 shots to help the Wolves win 11-1!

#22 Brenna Reid

The next day, on Sunday February 4, the Wolves headed out to Fort Saskatchewan to face off against the Fury. Midway through the first period, the Wolves opened the scoring on the power play with a goal from #27 Megan Tipton. Later in the period, #88 Chloe Johnson added a goal and increased the Wolves' lead. In the second period, #24 Kate Macpherson scored just two and a half minutes in. The Fury finally got on the board midway through the period with a goal of their own. The Wolves answered back less than a minute later with a goal from Lavoie. With three minutes left in the period, #14 Logan Basterash scored on the power play. A minute later, the Fury answered back with a goal of their own. Then, just thirty seconds later, they scored again, looking for the come back. Both teams battled hard through the third period. Basterash scored her second of the game at the midway mark. Minutes later, another Wolves goal came from #5 Claudine Boucher. The Wolves sealed the game with a goal with just two minutes left in the game from #17 Julia Birmingham. #31 Paige Thomas made 13 saves to help the Wolves win 8-3!

#16 Carolyne Lavoie

On Saturday, February 10, the Wolves headed out to Ardrossan to take on the Steele in their last regular season game of the season! Both teams battled hard through the first period, but despite two power plays for each team, neither team was able to put the puck past either goaltender and the game remained scoreless after one. In the second period, the Wolves were finally able to get on the board when Lavoie scored a power play goal midway through the period. The Wolves furthered their lead in the third period, with a goal coming from Birmingham about five minutes in. The Steele finally got on the board just a minute later with a power play goal of their own. With less than two minutes left, the Wolves scored again on the power play from #6 Brooklyn Piebiak to quash any hopes of a Steele comeback. Batke turned aside 7 of 8 shots in the 3-1 win!

#17 Julia Birmingham

The Wolves finished the regular season in first place with a record of 23-2-0-1, a .897 win percentage, and 70 points to clinch home ice advantage through playoffs. Round 1 of playoffs starts on February 17 and the Wolves will be facing off against the Central Alberta Amazons at 5:45 pm at Castledowns. We hope to see you there!
