SFU Hockey was re-established in 2003 and has competed in the
BCIHL under a 'club' and later a 'sport-club' model at SFU for the last 9 years. SFU Hockey helped launch the BCIHL in 2006, which now consists of Eastern Washington University, Selkirk College, Simon Fraser University, Thompson Rivers University, Trinity Western University and the University of Victoria. Former members include the University of Northern British Columbia (2006-07), and the University of the Fraser Valley (2006-2011). SFU Hockey is based out of Bill Copeland Arena in Burnaby, BC.
SFU Hockey has remained committed to strengthening college hockey in BC as well as promoting inter-league play between BCIHL, CIS, and NCAA programs. During the 2011/2012 season SFU hosted both UBC and Air Force, CIS and NCAA D1 programs respectively, in exhibition play. The current SFU roster is a mix of top-end Junior B players, Junior A, and Major Junior players all recruited by the Hockey Development team.
While it remains committed to competing in and strengthening the BCIHL, the league in which it has been an integral part of establishing, SFU Hockey's long term plans do include operating under the 'varsity' model at SFU and competing in the NCAA.
SFU Hockey also remains committed to building a strong sense of community within Burnaby and works closely with Burnaby Minor Hockey as well as a number of schools in the Lower Mainland.
Without the generous support of Burnaby Minor Hockey, local businesses and schools, and most of all SFU Athletics and Alumni, SFU Hockey would not be able to operate and continue to raise our level of competition to the high standards we have come to expect.
