AJFHL Champions!

The Wolves beat the Cochrane Chaos in three games, accomplishing a clean sweep all through playoffs and winning the 2024 AJFHL championship!

#29 Havana Batke

The Wolves hosted the Chaos for Game 1 of the championship series on Saturday, March 9. The first period was tight, as the Chaos came out strong and put the Wolves back on their heels for the first eight or so minutes of the period. The Wolves' defence held strong and they began to battle back and even out the game. The teams battled back and forth but both goaltenders stood strong and neither team gave up any good scoring chances. Seven minutes into the second period, the Chaos were the first to score on a breakaway with back pressure that went top corner over the glove of #29 Havana Batke. Later in the period, the Wolves tied the game on the power play with a goal from #19 Natalie Buttle when she found the puck in the crease off a scramble in front and was able to get a stick on it and put it in the net. The Wolves finally got their first lead of the game with less than three minutes left in the game when #11 Sydney Dutertre received a pass in the slot from behind the net and tapped it in. The Chaos tied it up five minutes into the third period when a player picked up a loose puck off of a broken rush and turned and fired it on net. Later in the period, the Chaos put the puck in front from behind the net. After a scramble at the side of the net, the puck found its way past Batke and the Chaos took a 3-2 lead with just over five minutes left in the game. With three minutes left in the game, the Chaos took a penalty. At the two minute mark, the Wolves pulled their goalie so that they had a two-man advantage. With just over a minute left in the game, a shot from the point made it through and the rebound landed perfectly on Dutertre's stick who was sitting at the back door of the net. She tapped the puck in to tie the game at the 11th hour and force overtime. The Chaos took another penalty with just seconds left in the game, so overtime started with the Wolves on a 4 on 3 power play. Off of a draw in the offensive zone, the centre pushed the puck forward. Buttle stepped into the circle and fired a quick shot on net, that deflected off of the Chaos goaltender and into the back of the net! The Wolves took Game 1 4-3 in overtime. Batke stopped 27 of the 30 shots that she faced to help the Wolves get the win!

Game 2 was back at Castledowns Rec Centre on Sunday, March 10. Same as the first game, both teams battled hard through the first period without giving up many scoring chances on either side. Both goaltenders stood strong and the score remained 0-0 after the first. The Chaos opened the scoring again just four minutes into the second period when a pass from behind the net connected with a player streaking towards the net who then backhanded the puck up and over Batke's glove on the short side. Later in the period, the Wolves got a 40 second 5 on 3 power play. The defence drew the Chaos penalty killer and the goalie over before passing it across the zone to the back door where #16 Carolyne Lavoie was waiting. She shot the puck into the virtually empty net to tie the game up for the Wolves. In the third period, the Wolves rushed the puck up the ice 3 on 2. Buttle picked up a drop pass to the middle and walked right into the slot, before releasing a shot that beat the Chaos goaltender just under her glove on the far side to give the Wolves their first lead of the game. With a minute and a half left in the game, the Chaos pulled their goalie. The Wolves were able to push the puck out, and Dutertre got a pass across the neutral zone and shot the puck down the ice and into the empty net from the red line. In the last seconds of the game, #14 Logan Basterash started streaking up ice when the defence got the puck on her stick. Basterash got the pass and put the puck in the empty net off of a breakaway to seal the game 4-1. Batke turned aside 26 shots to help the Wolves win Game 2 and go up 2-0 in the series!

#11 Sydney Dutertre

The Wolves hopped on the bus on Saturday, March 16, and headed down to Cochrane for Game 3 of the championship series. This was a do-or-die game for the Chaos, and the Wolves were hoping to win in order to not have to play on Sunday and instead be able to head home early with the trophy and the banner. The Wolves opened the scoring for the first time in the series halfway through the first period. On the power play, a shot from the point got blocked in front of the Chaos net, but Basterash was able to find the puck and put it in the far side of the net for the first goal of the game. In the second period, the Chaos were working the puck down low. They attempted a pass from behind the goal line to the front of the net that deflected off of a Wolves player and up and into the net to tie the game. Both teams battled hard through the third period, but no one was giving up scoring chances in this tight of a race. With six minutes left in the game, #4 Rory Bothwell won a defensive zone face-off. She turned grabbed the puck from behind her and skated down into the corner. She then turned around up-ice and flipped the puck high into the air so that it landed in the neutral zone. Lavoie was already skating up-ice as soon as the puck was dropped. She was ahead of the Chaos defence and picked up the puck in the neutral zone for a clean breakaway. Lavoie skated in on the goalie and shot the puck over her left shoulder, going top shelf and popping the goalie's water bottle to give the Wolves a late lead in the game. The Chaos pulled their goalie with two and a half minutes left in the game. The Wolves played a tight defensive system in their zone, blocking lots of shots and clearing players and pucks out from in front of the net until the buzzer sounded. The players flooded the ice and mobbed Batke, who had made 35 saves in the championship game. There was a medal ceremony and the Wolves were presented with the cup and banner, and family and friends later came onto the ice to take photos with the championship team.

#16 Carolyne Lavoie

After getting swept in the first round of playoffs last year by the bottom team in the North Division, the theme of the season this year for the Wolves was Unfinished Business, and did they ever finish it. Recording only two losses this year and one overtime loss, the Wolves dominated the league and swept playoffs, going undefeated on their run to the cup, which may be the first time that an AJFHL team has ever accomplished that feat. We are looking forward to the All-Star Game and are excited for some of our players who have been nominated for awards. We are also looking forward to our year-end banquet and wrapping up the season on the highest note possible. We could not be prouder of what the team has accomplished this season, and we are hoping to carry these good vibes forward into the next! Stay tuned for announcements regarding Summer Skates dates and times, those should be out shortly!
