Rugby Canada Super League - Senior
NATIONAL JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND PREVIEW
- Submitted by
The weekend ahead sees a lot of action in the National Junior Championship, with the Eastern Final and Prairie Division tournament scheduled to take place.

Friday marks the start of the 3-team Prairie Division round-robin tournament.  Saskatchewan will be hosting the event at Regina Rugby Park from July 9 - 11, and  their provincial neighbours of Alberta and Manitoba will be in town with the aim to take the title.

The Prairie tournament will determine the winner of the division who will be rewarded with not only a spot in the Western Final, but also hosting rights for the important match.  Vancouver Wave clinched the visitors spot in the Western Final last Saturday with a narrow win over Fraser Valley Venom.

Alberta have restructured their previous inter-branch teams of Calgary and Edmonton into a single provincial entry.  Saskatchewan and Manitoba have followed suit and will look to compete with the top players in their respective  provinces.

The Saskatchewan Rugby Union agreed to host the event at Regina Rugby Park, a great rugby facility in the southwest of the city, which played home to the Saskatchewan Prairie Fire when they defeated the Niagara Thunder in the former senior Rugby Canada Super League final in 2007.  Saskatchewan's Under-20's will attempt to bring back good fortune this weekend.

On the other side of the country, the Newfoundland Rock will host the Eastern Final on Saturday July 10 at Swilers Rugby Complex.  The Niagara Thunder, who defeated Ottawa to take the Central Division, are the visitors and as a franchise are accustomed to the traditions of rugby and faithful crowds on the rock.

The two eastern teams are well acquainted having paired up in the Eastern Final once before in 2008.  The Thunder - Rock rivalry is one that guarantees a tough game of rugby ahead and Saturday's final will surely not disappoint.  Kickoff is set for 3pm in St. John's.
