McGovern Shutsdown Oppostion and Leads TC to Title |

In many cases, a hockey team goes as far as its
goalie can take it. On April 10, Team Connecticut
goalie Susan McGovern put her team on her
shoulders and carried it to a 2-0 win over Team
Detroit in USA Hockey's 2005 Women’s Senior B
National Championship final at the Cornerstone
Community Ice Arena.
McGovern led the way with 18 saves, including 10
in the first period as Team Connecticut won its
second Senior B title (Connecticut also won in
2002).
“Susan just played an outstanding tournament,”
Team Connecticut coach Ralph Russo said. “She
had three straight shutouts to end the tournament.
I give her all of the credit in the world. The team
really rallied around her.”
Detroit came out of the gate quickly in the opening
period, peppering McGovern with 10 shots on goal.
McGovern was actually pleased to see the early
action.
“It’s always nice to have some shots on goal right
away to get in the flow of the game,” McGovern
said. “It kept my legs going and it always keeps
you in the game.”
Despite only three shots on goal in the first period,
Connecticut made one of them count. Anna
Siliciano scored at the 11:14 mark on a
wrap-around shot that beat Detroit goalie Anna
Vandermarliere.
“That first goal made a big difference,” Russo said.
“Both teams were feeling each other out at that
point. We had trouble getting going, but that was
mainly due to their defense. I think we settled down
a bit after that first goal.”
Connecticut had a couple of more chances to
lengthen its lead, but couldn’t capitalize on two
outstanding scoring opportunities.
With two consecutive Detroit penalties, Connecticut
had a five-on-three power opportunity, but, 10
seconds into it, Connecticut committed a
frustration penalty of its own. Detroit staved off the
power play and still found itself trailing by just one
goal.
With three minutes to play in the second period,
Connecticut’s Courtney Johnson had a breakaway
and ended up hitting the crossbar.
“I didn’t really have control of the puck as it was
kind of wobbling,” said Johnson, who had four
goals and four assists in the tournament.
“Personally, I thought it went in. It hit the crossbar
at a funny angle and came out. It is part of the
game, and we just kept playing hard.”
Johnson would get the last laugh, though, as she
was able to seal the win with an empty-net goal
with just over a minute to play.
“It was nice to get that open-net goal,” Johnson
said. “It secured the win for us in a way. It gave the
team a little breathing room. We were all really
tired, as are all of the other teams. We were
fortunate to get that goal.”
Even with the two-goal cushion, McGovern wasn’t
about to take any chances relaxing in net.
“I am still nervous with a two-goal lead,” said
McGovern, who allowed just four goals in 107
shots during the tournament. “It doesn’t take much
to get back in the game. That definitely helped, but
it was still nerve-wracking, to say the least.”
McGovern, who took last year off, was really happy
to win this for her team, as she knows how hard
her teammates have worked to make their
championship dream a reality.
“I am just so happy for these girls,” McGovern said.
“They lost in the quarterfinals last year, and they
were determined to get the job done. It is a very
sweet feeling.”

TEAM CT WINS USAH WOMEN'S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS |
|
TC swept both the semi and title games and was
crowned USA Hockey's Women's Senior B
National Champs. In the morning game TC beat
the Massachusetts Lighting 5-0. Wallis Finger led
the scoring with a pair of goals. The other goals
were added by Lauren Wiggins, Anita Khar and
Jackie Tamsin who also added two assists.
Assists were awarded to Anita Khar, Siobhan
Russell, LeeAnne Irwin and Courtney Johnson.
Sue McG was again outstanding in goaldenying
the Lightning all 21 times they shot and picking up
her second consecutive shutout. ----- In the
championship game vs also undefeated Team
Detroit, TC again gets an outstanding effort from
Sue McGovern as she stops all 18 of Detriot's
shots, gets her third straight shutout. Anna
Siliciano got the first TC goal and Courtney
Johnson added the game ender in the second.
Team Connecticut also dominated the stat sheets
for this Championship Tourney as the top three
scorers were all from our team. Jackie Tamsin led
all scorers with 6 goals and 5 assists, Lauren
Wiggins was next with 6goals 3 assists and
Courtney Johnson scored 4 goals and 4 assists.
The leading Goalie was Sue McGovern who
posted a 6-0 record with shutouts in the Quarter,
Semi and Final Games. Her 0.67 Goals Against
average and 96.7% save rate was outstanding. |

win over the NORTHERN LIGHTS. |

TC BEATS BRIDGEWATER IN GAME 2 |
|
TC won a hard fought victory over The Bridgewater,
NJ Wings Hockey Club 5-2 to take the lead
in pool play. A win is a win and TC earned this
one. Falling behind 1-0 in the first 2 minutes TC
surged back first tying it with a power play goal by
Anna Siliciano on a feed from Lauren Wiggins with
just over 5 minutes remaining. Then they adding
two more in
the second period both by Courtney Johnson. The
first goal came from a pass by Jackie Tamsin and
the second goal with just 2
ticks on the clock came from passes by Wallis
Finger and Jackie Tamsin. After the ice cut the
Wings got after the
puck and closed the gap to 3-2 just 2 minutes into
the third period. Courtney Johnson then smacked
in her
third goal and Lauren Wiggins struck the final blow
off a pass from LeeAnne Irwin and TC WINS. Sue
McGovern was again stingy as she grabbed 22 of
24 shots. |

TC Ends Pool Play With a Win |
|
TC was awarded first seed in its divisional pool
play at the USA Hockey National Women's
Championships. By winning its third straight 9-1
over the Oakland California Seals TC will gain the
top berth in the quarterfinals vs Minnesota
Northern Lights. Jackie Tamsin led the attack as
she recorded a hat trick and added an assist.
Almost the entire team enjoyed the offensive
onslaught as Sarah Hanna, Siobhan Russell,
Stephanie Nedoszytko, LeeAnne Irwin, Lauren
Wiggins and Anita also added goals.
LeeAnne,Courtney Johnson (2), Anita Khar, Sarah
Hanna, Lauren Wiggins and Anna Siliciano all
added assists. Sue Mc Govern stopped 14 0f 15
but only a goal with 18 seconds seperated Her
with her first shutout. |

TC takes Game 1 at Nationals |
|
Team Connecticut jumped on Syracuse Warriors
scoring 3 in the first period and 2 more in the
second enroute to a 5-1 opening game win.
Jackie Tamsin opened the scoring with 8:25 left in
the first period off a rebound from shots by Wallis
Finger and Courtney Johnson. Melissa Gray then
cherry
picked a goal off a feed from Steph Nedoszytko
with just 2:16 left in the period for the second
score. It took just 33 seconds for Wallis Finger to
drop a pass back to her open point and Siobhan
Russell let go a blast that found the right corner of
the net and TC led 3-0 going into the second. In
the second period TC built its lead on a power play
goal by LeeAnne Irwin from Lauren Wiggins and
Anna Siliciano and the same group teamed up
again 5 minutes later this time Lauren Wiggins
smacked it in from Anna and LeeAnne. Sue
McGovern was the glue that held the team together
stopping 16 of 17 shots with only a
fluke shot off a defensemen's skate with 30
seconds left the only score. |

TC SWEEPS THE NEW ENGLAND REGIONALS |
|
TC won all 5 of its games at New England
Regionals in snowy Woodstock, Vermont saving
its best performance for last. TC flexed its muscle
in the championship game beating a talented
Vermont Full Stride Flyers 5-1 and
powering its way to its 6th straight berth in The
USA Hockey National Championship in April. |

TC Thumps Northern Lights |
|
Even with a short bench TC managed a well
played 7-0 win over The Northern Lights U-19
team. Sue "Glue" McGovern recorded her 6th
shutout stopping all 17 shots that came her way
managing the crease superbly. Offensively, Sarah
Hanna and Melissa Gray each netted 2 goals while
Siobhan Russell, Stephanie Nedoszytko and Anna
Siliciano each added 1. Assists were awarded to
Regan Schubel 2, Siobhan Russell 2 and Aimee
LaBarre . We last heard that Jackie Tamsin is still
on I-84 somewhere. If anyone finds her please
return her to Team Connecticut by Friday. |

TC WINS AUGUSTA TOURNAMENT |

Game 1 Saturday, 2/26 Maine Selects 3 - Team
Connecticut 1. Team Connecticut outshoots
Selects 50-19 but only managed one goal off the
stick of Lauren Wiggins. -------------- Game 2
Saturday Night, 2/26 Team Connect 1 - NY Raiders
1. Again TC could only manage one goal by Anita
Kahr on 38 shots. Regan Schubel and LeeAnne
Irwin picked up assists and Sue McGovern saved
16 of 17. -------- Game 3 Sunday Morning 2/27 vs
Maine Mosquitos. A new day and seemingly a new
team as Team Connecticut, who dug a hole for
themselves on Saturday, needed a win and a big
goal differential in the final play down game to gain
a berth in the finals.
They did both as they pounded the host Mosquitos
8-1. Courtney Johnson, 2 goals - 1 assist, opened
the scoring at 3:07 of the first period. The next goal
followed 19 seconds later by Jackie Tamsin, 1-2,
and Lauren Wiggins scored twice in the next 49
seconds giving TC a 4-0 lead at the end of the
first period. TC never looked back adding a goal by
Regan Schubel, 1-1, in the second and three more
in the third to cap off the scoring. Wallis Finger 1-1
and Stephanie Nedoszytko 1 goal capped the goal
scoring while LeeAnne Irwin 2, Sarah Hanna, Anita
Khar and Carol Franco added assists. Sue Mc
Govern stopped 14 of 15 for the win. TC outshot
the Mosquitos 38-14. -------- Final --------- Team
Connecticut 3 - Full Stride Flyers
0. TC saved its best effort for last as they got down
to business shutting down the Flyers potent
offense while scoring 3 unanswered goals. Sue
McGovern earned a well deserved shutout
stopping all 19 shots she faced and controlling the
crease. Courtney Johnson again put the first score
up on the board in the first period assisted by
Jackie Tamsin and Wallis Finger. Lauren Wiggins
added a second period score with help from Anita
kahr and LeeAnne Irwin. Anita completed the
scoring in the third with assists from LeeAnne
Irwin and Kelly Roos. TC outshots the Flyers
25-19. |

TC Nips Raiders |
|
Team Connecticut won its third straight as they
defeated the NY Raiders 2-1 behind strong
goaltending from Sue McGovern and a hard team
effort. LeeAnne Irwin broke the ice inside the first
minute of play with an unassisted goal . The
Raiders came right back 40 seconds later to knot
the score. The battle went back and forth until TC
slowly turned the momentum back in their
direction in the second. TC finally broke through
as Regan (Relish) Schubel put the puck in the top
left corner for the game winner on a power play. |

TC Rolls Past Vipers |
|
TC visited the Pioneer Valley Vipers in Greenfield
and enjoyed a 9-3 win. TC out shot the Vipers
53-10 as Sue McGovern picked up her 13th win.
Rookie, Amy LaBarre picked up her first hat trick for
Team CT as Lauren Wiggins and Melissa Gray
each added two goals. Defensemen Sarah Hanna
1 Goal and 2 Assists, and Regan (Relish)
Schubel and Siobhan Russel 3 assists capped
the scoring for TC. |

Happy New Year -TC 3 Bridgewater Wings 1 |
|
TC rang up a win to celebrate the New Year and
start off the second half right. The Wings opened
the scoring with a rebound goal from Deb Papa.
That goal would be all the scoring the Wings
would muster as a constant offensive attack and
Sue McGovern saw to that. Late in the first period
Lauren Wiggins netted the first goal off assists
from Siobhan Russell and LeeAnne Irwin to tie the
score. The first three minutes of the second period
gave TC the lead for good as Wallis Finger scored
the game winner off a feed from Jackie Tamsin
and LeeAnne Irwin scored an insurance goal from
Lauren Wiggins. TC and the Wings will meet
again on February 6th at 4:15pm in Bridgewater,
NJ. |

TC DROPS A PAIR TO END FIRST HALF |
|
TC lost its last two games of 2004, to the NoStars
1-0 and Raiders 5-1 to end its first half of the
season 12-5-1. This was not the way we planned
to begin our three week holiday break, but
hopefully the team will enjoy their family, friends
and holiday cheer.
January 8th opens our second half and will double
our efforts to reach our goals. |

Welcome Back Jaks |
|
TC was treated to a Thanksgiving present as
Jackie Tamsin rejoined the club bringing a
talented newcomer, Courtney Johnson with her.
The celebration was at the expense of the
Cheetah's at The New England Sports Center in
Marlboro, MA. Jackie wasted little
time climbing up the stats sheet with a unassisted
goal
in the first period and adding three assists in the
third. Courtney showed off some of her skills
adding a goal and a pair of assists. Lauren
Wiggins continued her scoring blitz with two goals
and Aimee LaBarre marked her presence with a
goal. Siobhan Russell and Sarah Hanna added
assists as Team Connecticut rolled 5-1. Sue
McGovern was solid as usual stopping 16 of 17
shots for her 10th win. TC outshot the Cheetah's
44-17 |

TC BESTS HUDSON RIVER 3-1 |
|
Team Connecticut exacted a measure of revenge
on their home ice as they beat the Hudson River
Waves 3-1. Less than a week after losing the
X-Checking Cancer Tourney final to the Waves, TC
got back to their winning ways. Lauren Wiggins
got the team off to a flying start at 2:15 of the first
scoring off a nice feed from LeeAnne Irwin. Four
minutes later Sarah Hanna netted the game
winner off a pass from Missy Gray. LeeAnne Irwin
added the insurance goal in the third period,
assisted by Lauren Wiggins. The defense bottled
up the Waves attack and Sue McGovern stopped
12 of 13 shots for the win. TC outshot the Waves
29-13. |

TC RUNS OUT OF GAS IN TOURNEY FINAL |
|
After posting a strong 7-0 win over the North
Carolina Trailblazers in a late Sunday morning
contest. A hot Hudson River Waves team and the
forth game in two days proved too much for TC to
handle as they lost in the X-Checking Cancer final
3-0. In the first game Tc scored early and often
putting 5 goals on the scoresheet in the first
period. Missy Gray had her first career hat trick to
lead the scoring. LeeAnne Irwin added 2 goals
and an assist and Regan Schubel and Lauren
Wiggins netted the other goals. Aimee LaBarre(3),
Lauren Wiggins(2), Sarah Hanna(2), Stephanie
Nedoszytko, Wallis Finger, Carol Franco and
Carolyn DiNapoli had assists. Sue McGovern
picked up the shutout win.

Team Connecticut out shot the Rhode Island
Panthers 58-5 on their way to a 7-0 penalty filled
victory. Sarah Hanna busted loose for 4 goals
while Siobhan Russell, Lauren Wiggins and
Aimee LaBarre also added goals. Wallis Finger
and LeeAnne Irwin each had 2 assists while
Siobhan and Carol Franco had assists. Sue
McGovern stopped 5 shots for a shutout and her 7
straight win. |

TC TAKES X-CHECK CANCER TOURNEY OPENER |
|
Team Connecticut opened their tournament
championship bid with a hard fought 3-2 victory
over the Syracuse Warriors. Carolyn DiNapoli
broke the ice in the first period, scoring with an
assist by Lauren Wiggins. With the score tied in
the second Siobhan Russell smacked one home
with feeds from Sarah Hanna and Aimee LaBarre.
LeeAnne Irwin netted the game winner with an
unassisted wrister from the left faceoff circle. Sue
Mc Govern stopped 14 of 16 shots for the win. |

CROSS CHECK COLON CANCER TOURNAMENT |
|
This weekend TC will gas up and head for Clifton
Park, NY. The Clifton Park Arena is the site for the
Artic Foxes X-Checking Colon Cancer Tournament.
We are looking forward to good competition and a
good time. Our hockey schedule for the weekend

Good Weekend for TC |
|
Team Connecticut capped off a successful
weekend beating one of Greater New Haven's
Men's Teams 5-2. Anna Siliciano led the offense
with 2 goal and an assist. Lauren Wiggins
continued her early season scoring barrage
addind a goal and assist. Siobhan Russell also
added a goal and an assist. Melissa Gray added a
goal and Kelly Roos had an assist. Sue Mc
Govern stopped 24 of 26 shots and picked up the
win. Saturday's game saw a barrage of scoring
with everyone chipped in asTC dropped the
Pioneer Valley Vipers 15-0. Sue McG picked up
her first shutout of the season. |

Hooksett Tournament |
|
Team CT showed up a little flat this weekend but
thanks to great efforts picked up the level of play
and showed some of what mid-season will look
like. We definitely played better each game of the
tournament. TC finished 1-2-1 for the weekend. |

Saturday and two on Sunday at the Ice Den in

TC TAKES SEASON OPENER |
|
TC's won its 2004-05 season opener at home vs
The CT Northern Lights 7-1. The first
period started out as a tight defensive struggle.
Both squads were
scraping off some rust and overcoming the soft
wet ice at Wesleyan University Arena as the first
period ended 0-0. The second period was another
story. As the ice set up TC heated up scoring 5
goals in the period and carrying a 5-1 lead into the
third.
The game ended 7-1 with TC out shooting the
Northern Lights 35-15 and dominating play.
Leading TC's
scoring was newcomer Anna Siliciano with 4
goals. Lauren Wiggins scored 2 goals and
2 assists and LeeAnne Irwin added the other goal.
Regan Schubel, Melissa Gray, Carol Franco
and Diane Malone each had an assist. Kelly Roos
was solid at defense helping Sue (The Glue)
McGovern celebrate her return from a one year
maternity leave stopping 14 of 15 shots in picking
up the win. Good job from all. |

2nd ANNUAL TC SUMMER SIZZLER 3 on 3 TOURNEY |
|
Team Connecticut's Summer Sizzler at the Northford Ice Pavilion came and went this past Saturday. I think all 40 skaters and goalies involved agree that it was alot of hockey and alot of fun. After 8 games and 5 hours of ice a tournament champion was crowned. Kevin Barton, Super Bob Dargiewicz, Lynn Gattinella, Ken Mac Lean, Joe Weber, Doreen Paul and Carol Franco powered their way to a 4-0 record and the championship. All the games were close most decided by a single goal. We also had our first shootout in the third place game with the game decided on the 22nd shot. Goaltending and the pace and level of play was outstanding. The food, beverage and camaraderie capped off a perfect day. We are sorry for all those who couldn't attend, there's always next time. |

TEAM CT AT THE USA HOCKEY WOMEN'S NATIONALS |

Team Connecticut ended their march to the
national championship two games short. Losing a
heartbreaking quarterfinal game to Michigan's
O'Leary Hawks, 4-3, after going
undefeated,(3-0),and first ranked in their division.

TC Wins New England Regional Championships |
|
The TC ladies went undefeated winning all five games to notch their fourth New England Championship. The ride to the championship wasn't an easy one as TC had to get by a tough New Hampshire North Stars team in the elimination round 3-2 and won an overtime thriller in the finals against Vermont's Team Fullstride, last years National's runner-up. A dramatic goal by Wallis Finger with just under 2 minutes left in the first overtime put an end to the marathon and Team Connecticut in the National Tournament. The team played with character and determination overcoming the fatigue of playing five games in 46 hours to win a championship that put a tear in Coach Russo eye. |
