NVSFFL Philosophy

NVSFFL Philosophy

NVSFFL Philosophy

The NVSFFL would like to warmly welcome all the players, coaches, refs, fans, and families. Thank you for joining the league for another exciting North Vancouver Spring Flag Football season! Volunteers are an enormous part of the NVSFFL and the league thanks them for dedicating their time, effort, and energy to Spring Flag football on the beautiful North Shore. Whether you are new to the league or returning, the league hopes you will have lots of fun.

The NVSFFL was established in 2009 and has grown to be one of Canada's largest flag football leagues! The league's primary goal is simple: have a great experience and hopefully create lifelong memories and friendships. This has been the goal of the league since the very beginning and is the reason why the league continues to grow each year. A player’s positive or negative experience during a season directly results from their coaches. Coaches are asked to understand the positive impact they can have on the players on their team and the other teams in the league. We are proud of our coaches' efforts to honour our league’s philosophy.

The NVSFFL is organized by the New Directions Youth and Family Services Society. It aims to help grow and develop football on the North Shore and support its players to become outstanding citizens. The power and importance of sport can be life-changing for many, and the NVSFFL does its best to empower every player, regardless of their skill level.

All teams practice and play once a week. Players must have fair playing time regardless of skill level and practice attendance. The league caters to very active families, meaning some players won’t be able to attend every game or practice. It is very important to attend practice and players (parents) are asked to inform their coaches of games and practices they will miss. Having clear communication between players and coaches is very important! For games to be Official all players need to be registered and on the roster of that team. Borrowing players or using unregistered players will result in a default and the game can still be played as an exhibition

The NVSFFL also does its best to ensure that every player has the opportunity to play with their friends, which can lead to an imbalance of skill on specific teams. Most age groups have a AA and A division to help keep games competitive. Wins by large margins aren’t fun; coaches should do their best to keep them respectful and fair. Stronger teams may need to place players in different positions to keep a game close and competitive. Coaches can do a lot to control how scores play out, and we appreciate their effort to keep games close. On behalf of the league, coaches award prizes donated by our BC Lions ( thanks Amar and Natalie Doman) at the end of each game to a player on their team with the best sportsmanship and attitude, values we strive to encourage and support.

We have a strict zero abuse tolerance policy. Let's all do our part to make the game fun for everyone. We have some young and new refs so let's all do our part to help mentor and be supportive.

With all that being said, the NVSFFL wishes you the best of luck this season and hopes your season is full of positive experiences.

North Shore Spring Football Academy

North Shore Spring Football Academy

The NVSFFL is proud to announce our third season of the North Shore Spring Football Academy. We are partnering with Amar and Natalie Doman of the BC Lions and greatly appreciate their support in making this happen.

The football academy is looking for players that want to excel in football and are willing to put in the work. We have two groups training at separate times, the junior group will be Grades 6,7,8 and 9. The Senior group will be Grades 10,11,12 and University. Many of our players in the Academy have received University Scholarships.

The Academy will be from April 21st to June 26th, with two sessions per week for 20 sessions. Sessions will be between an hour and an hour and 15 minutes. The younger group will be on Mondays from 5:30 to 6:45 pm at Argyle and Thursdays from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at Confederation. The older group will be from 6:45  to 8:00 pm Mondays at Argyle and Thursdays at Confederation from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. There could be slight changes to the schedule and fields during the season.

Sessions will focus on speed training, sports core movement, and football skill development. This will be for all positions, and the applicants chosen will become better athletes and football players, guaranteed. This is open to everyone from grades 6 to University. To be eligible, players must be registered in our North Van Spring Flag Football League for the 2025 season.

There will be no cost; it is a free academy for all chosen applicants. We are limiting the Academy to a maximum of 20 players per group. A committee will select the players.Returning players do not have to do the application process again. Successful applicants are expected to have 80 % or more attendance at the Academy.

We are incredibly excited to announce that we have three fantastic coaches working with the players in the Academy. You couldn't find three more dedicate, caring and skilled coaches, they are incredible.

Sports Core Movement: Rob Williams is one of the top Sports Coaches in North America. He works with professional athletes in the NFL, CFL, NHL, and many other sports. Nathan Rourke from the BC Lions is one of Rob's students and attributes much of his success to him. Rob has a history of helping all his athletes improve their performance.

Speed: Errol is one of the top speed coaches and a former NCAA Division One sprinter. He will make everyone faster, and speed is crucial in all sports.

Football Skills:  We are excited to announce that Anthony Findlay will take over for Brent Burns. Brent has moved to Powell River, and we wish him all the best, and he will be missed. But we are very excited to have Anthony Findlay, a high-level football coach. Anthony is a former CFL and UBC player. Anthony is the owner/operator of Level 10 Fitness, which trains many high-level athletes and Olympic Gold Medalists; he has also coached in our flag league and VANCOUVER COLLEGE for many years.

Applications: For applications, we are looking for a small note from 1. a parent/teacher and 2. a coach about your attitude and work ethic at school and one of the teams you played on. 3. Plus, a small paragraph from the youth about why they would like to be part of the Academy. The deadline for Applications is April 15th, 2025. Please send applications to nvsfflacademy@gmail.com
