Coquitlam Express
Mackin Named WCHA Rookie of the Month
- Submitted by
After posting the first 50-goal campaign in the BCHL in five years last season with the Coquitlam Express, there were lofty expectations for Corey Mackin at Ferris State University but so far, he's been able to match what others had envisioned for him.

The Philadelphia native - who never played hockey on ice until the age of 12, opting instead for roller hockey as a youth - has just been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's (WCHA) rookie of the month for November. He registered three goals and four assists for the month and sits third on the team in scoring with 5-8-13 in 16 games played so far this season.

Mackin ranked among the NCAA’s top rookie scoring leaders for November and played a key role as Ferris State posted a win or tie in five of eight outings to maintain pace in the upper half of the WCHA standings.

Last season with the Express, Mackin posted 50 goals and 54 helpers in 58 games to take the BCHL's Brett Hull Trophy as scoring champion and he was also named the winner of the Vern Dye Memorial Trophy as league MVP. Over two seasons with Coquitlam, he racked up 74 goals and 80 assists for 154 points in 115 career games. He helped the Express to the 2014 Fred Page Cup BCHL title as well.

On the national stage last season, Mackin garnered recognition from the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) as its MVP and Top Forward.

Heading into this season with Ferris State, the conference's coaches chose Mackin as the preseason rookie of the year.

He's making them look pretty smart right now.
