The New Tecumseth Tornados touched down in Vaughn this afternoon leaving the Battalions to ride out the storm early in the second game of the 2006 Minor Atom A Silver Stick qualifier. The Tornados came out fast and furious hitting and taking the game to the Battalions.
The story of the game was Adam Dunn who made some spectacular saves early in the first period, only surrendering a single goal. It took a while for the Battalions to find their stride in this game, being outshot 5 to 2 in the first period.
Having weathered the storm, the Battalions began to find their legs and battle back against the Tornados in the second period, outshooting them 7 to 1 in the second period. The Tornado net keeper was up to the challenge, turning aside all 7 shots he faced.
In the 3rd period, it was Jaden Lindo who supplied the spark that the Battalions needed. The play was set up when Alex Torresan kept the puck in at the point in the Tornado zone. The Battalions were swarming all over the Tornados who failed to clear the puck 3 times. Coleman and Hodder each had their shots blocked when finally Lindo picked up a loose puck and drove to the net firing a perfect shot to score the Battalions first goal of the game.
One minute later, Nicholas Prete found the back of the net after receiving a break away pass from Boswell and Brett Meiners. One minute later, the Battalions completed the scoring and took a 2 goal lead late in the game on a goal by Maraconda who was assisted by Astin Filipe and Steven Mckiel.
Late in the game the Battalions ran into some penalty trouble and had to complete the game with 2 men in the penalty box. Once again it was Dunn who made a number of great glove saves and 2 trios of outstanding penalty killers (Boswell, Toth, Torresan, Mariconda, McKiel and Kafes) to shut the door and preserve the 3 to 1 come from behind victory.
Hats off to all the boys who fought hard to get themselves back into the game and never gave up. You picked up the pace of the game when you needed to and you continued to battle against a tough opponent.
Way to go.
