East Kootenay Zone Head Coach Job Description
 
Position: East Kootenay Zone Head Coach
Team: U18 East Kootenay Avalanche AA
Season: 2025/2026
Reports To: East Kootenay Board and East Kootenay Zone Lead
Summary:
The East Kootenay Zone Head Coach leads the East Kootenay Avalanche team, overseeing player development, team operations, and ensuring adherence to program philosophy and policies. This role focuses on fostering a high-performance environment while promoting good citizenship and sportsmanship among players and staff.
 

Responsibilities:

Leadership & Communication:
  • Adhere and uphold the BC Hockey Code of Conduct and Alberta Elite Hockey League program’s values.
  • Collaborate with the East Kootenay Zone Lead and Zone Committee on program development.
  • Coordinate all team communication through the Zone Lead.
  • Work with the Zone Committee and Zone Lead to select Assistant Coaches for the season.
Player & Staff Development:
  • Participate in player evaluations as an evaluator during evaluation camps. Support the delivery of evaluation camps in conjunction with the Zone Lead which may entail running of skills sessions and benches during evaluation camps.
  • Develop and execute player development initiatives in coordination with the Zone Lead.
  • Plan on and off-ice activities in consultation with the Assistant Coach(es).
  • Design the practice plans in consultation with the Assistant Coach(es).
  • Plan, implement, and control pre-game preparation and communication with team.
  • Supervise players during road trips, ensuring safety and appropriate conduct.
Team Operations:
  • Obtain Treasurer approval for all financial decisions and use of team funds.
  • Organize team accommodations and meals for road trips.
  • Provide the Zone Lead with a road trip itinerary minimum two weeks prior to travel.
  • Support supervision of all players during road trips.
  • Provide information to the Zone Lead to monitor affiliate player use.
  • Elect an individual responsible for home game day duties – paying officials, scoresheets, lineup sheets, etc.
Compliance & Reporting:
  • Uphold the values and philosophy of Hockey Canada, BC Hockey, Alberta Elite Hockey and the East Kootenay District Minor Hockey Association.
  • Represent the East Kootenay Avalanche program professionally during all sanctioned events.
  • Monitor player conduct before, during, and after games, addressing any issues in collaboration with the Zone Lead.
  • Submit game sheets to the Zone Lead after each game.
  • Ensure a certified bench staff (Coach) and Hockey Canada Safety Person are present for all sanctioned events.
  • Work with the Zone Lead to manage and address player participation for those not in good standing.
Qualifications:
  • Development 1 (Dev1) Coaching Certificate
  • Criminal Record Check (CRC)
  • Respect in Sport (RIS)
  • Concussion Awareness Training Tool (CATT)
  • Hockey Canada Safety Person (HCSP)
  • Understanding BC Hockey Program of Excellence.
  • Strong hockey background in playing, coaching, and evaluating.
  • Strong interest and commitment to child/athlete development.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Experience in staff management and development.
  • Adhere to East Kootenay District Minor Hockey Association Policies and Procedures.
  • Non-parent status.
Time Commitment:
  • Weekly practices and/or games; usually 2-3 hours in duration.
  • Weekly game/practice preparation; usually 1-2 hours in duration.
  • Tournaments (home and away)
  • Attend meeting as required by Association at the start of the season
  • Check emails and answer any enquires in a timely fashion.
Compensation:
The position provides an annual stipend of $10,500 for the 2025/2026 season, distributed as follows:
  • $500 from Spring tryout fees, paid by May 1, 2025 (if attending).
  • $9500 from team player fees, paid in monthly installments on the 10th from September to March.
  • $500 from Main Camp tryout fees, paid by September 1, 2026 (if attending).
Vision of the East Kootenay Minor Hockey Association:
  • Promote and encourage good citizenship and sportsmanship among players and coaches.
  • Provide a Tier 1 hockey program within the district.
  • Offer an excellent environment for instruction, development, and competition to prepare players for higher levels of hockey.
Grounds for Release from Position:
The East Kootenay Avalanche reserves the right to release team officials for the following:
  • Failure to meet job responsibilities.
  • Inability to control the conduct of players.
  • Disrespect for the rules and regulations of Hockey Canada, BC Hockey, and Alberta Elite Hockey League.
  • Failure to uphold the philosophy and values of BC Hockey, Alberta Elite Hockey League, and the East Kootenay District Minor Hockey Association.
  • Use of alcohol or drugs during any sanctioned event.
  • Failure to fulfill team obligations.
  • Any conduct deemed by the East Kootenay Board to be contrary to the best interest of the program.
Employment Term:
  • Start Date: April 1, 2025
  • End Date: March 31, 2026
