On Saturday, October 14 the 95th annual Caledonia Cup, awarded to the top rugby club in the Maritimes, will take place between the Fredericton Loyalists Rugby Football Club and the PEI Mudmen at Fredericton Loyalists RFC’s home ground.
The Caledonia Cup is named after the fabled Caledonia RFC from Cape Breton who won the cup nine times in a row from 1929-1938. This year marks the 95th Caledonia Cup Championship. The Caledonia has been the pinnacle of men’s rugby supremacy in the Maritimes.
Match-Up:
This year the Caledonia will be played for between the Fredericton Loyalists Rugby Football Club, who have won the Caledonia the most out of any club: 12 times in its history and last time in 2013. While the PEI Mudmen, have made it to Caledonia for the first time since 1955 and will looking for the cup to come back to the island.
The Hunter’s Corner PEI Mudmen defeated Enfield in the Nova Scotia Division 1 McCurdy Cup game while the Fredericton Loyalists got passed the Belleisle Rovers in the New Brunswick McNair Cup final.
In the Maritime Elite League meeting the Fredericton Loyalists squeaked by the Mudmen on the island so this match will be a great tilt for Maritime rugby supremacy and bragging rights.
