Rugby Canada would like to thank His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston and his spouse Mrs. Sharon Johnston for their service to Canada over the last seven years.
The Governor General and Mrs. Johnston have been advocates for sports participation and excellence in Canada. The Johnstons were also huge supporters of Rugby Canada's Women's Olympic Bronze medalists. They attended three of the team's games at the Rio 2016 games and could be heard cheering loudly and proudly from the stands.
"It was wonderful to have the Governor General and Mrs. Johnston supporting our team in Rio," said Tim Powers Chair of the Rugby Canada Board of Directors. "They were as vocal as any Canadian supporter and fell in love with the game."
Rugby Canada has been fortunate to have Canadian leaders like the Johnstons take an active interest in our sport, our athletes and our community.
"The Governor General and Mrs. Johnston have done great service for Canadians during their time in office," noted Allen Vansen Chief Executive Officer of Rugby Canada. "On behalf of Rugby Canada I would like to thank them very much."
"The 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro were an incredible moment for Canadian Rugby and the support we received from the Governor General and Mrs. Johnston when we won bronze was great for our team,” said Ashley Steacy, RIO 2016 Bronze Medalist. “On behalf of my former teammates and I, I’d like to thank them very much."
David Johnston officially steps down from office on Monday, October 2nd. The new Governor General is Julie Payette.
