CALGARY - The Canadian Rugby Championship (CRC) U16 men & women’s and the U18 men & women’s tournaments began the first round of elimination play on day 4 of the tournament.
In the U18 men’s tournament, Newfoundland who were the number one seed going into elimination play fell in a tight battle to Alberta, where Austin Pinnell’s two tries were the difference in their 25 – 21 win. They will now face the Bears in the championship match after they comfortably defeated Equipe Quebec 44 – 10. In the other match of the day, the Keltics managed a 36 – 15 win over the Prairie Blizzard.
For the U18 women’s competitions, the Bears who were last year’s champions were surprised when the Keltics produced a winning performance to defeat British Columbia by 31 – 20. Elish Redshaw’s three conversions were pivotal in the Keltics win. Alberta will be joining Keltics in the finals match on Sunday after a nine try performance led by Alayna Scramstead was just too much for Ontario to handle in their 49 – 0 rout. The Blizzard also edged Quebec 26 – 21.
In U16 men play, all three Bears teams booked their place in today’s semifinals. British Columbia 1 who have yet to allow any points against them continued that pattern with a dominant 73 – 0 win over Sask. Nine different people got their names on the scoresheet for the British Columbia 2 in their 64 – 7 rout of Quebec. British Columbia 3 were the biggest winners from Friday after they were able to beat the higher ranked Blues team 24 -12 to reach the semi’s. The only team that can break up an all Bears final on Sunday is Alberta, who thanks to a ten try performance were clinical in their 72 – 5 rout of Newfoundland.
In U16 women’s play, there were no scheduled games yesterday as they prepared for today’s semi’s. Ontario hope to reach the final and defend their title when they face Alberta, whilst the Bears go up against the Keltics.
Semifinal games will begin at 12pm ET/ 9am PT on Saturday August 19 with Fields 1 and 2 being broadcasted LIVE on www.rugbycanada.tv
