Dog River Howlers Rugby Club’s Peni Lutudromu received The Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers presented to him last week in Regina. It is a Canadian decoration intended to honour volunteers who have made a significant and continual contribution to their community, either in Canada or abroad .
In February 2016 Peni Lutudromu’s home village of Nacamaki with 200 residents on Koro Island, Fiji, was decimated in Cyclone Winston, the most powerful storm to hit the island nation in history.
With the support of the rugby community Peni raised roughly $30,000. In turn he returned to his place of birth, bought building materials in Nadi and by boat shipped it to his home island . There he spearheaded the rebuilding not only of his family home, but also local school and church.
The Howlers 2 years previous to this catastrophy donated a new set of rugby strip, rugby balls and a tournament trophy named after Peni’s uncle to his home village of Nacamaki.
Peni again shows why we say that “it’s more than, a game it’s a way of life”
