Australia has lost it’s final game of the 2024 IIHF Division 2A World Championships in Belgrade last night, with a 5-4 defeat at the hands of the UAE. Despite being outshot 30-28 for the game, Australia continued their trend of jumping out to early leads and then falling in the final few minutes. In the first ever meeting between the two nations, Australia jumped out to an early lead thanks to a goal from the Melbourne Mustangs’ Vadim Virjassov, under 3 minutes into the first period. Perth Thunder’s Jamie Woodman added another just 4 minutes later to put the Roos’ 2-0 up early, his second goal for the week. However, Sergei Kuznetsov would answer back for the UAE a minute later to keep the game to a one-goal margin at the first intermission. Thunder’s Jordy Kyros scored again for Australia less than 90 seconds from the break, to put Australia back out to a two-goal lead at 3-1. Aleksei Toivonen continued his fine form in his debut tournament, making several key stops throughout the period to keep the UAE at bay. They would finally break through thanks to Artem Klavdiev at 11:46 of the second period to cut the deficit to one. The pressure continued from the UAE and they would find a tying goal at the hands of Dmitry Likhachev moments later, tying the game at the second intermission 3-3. The stage was set for a closely contested final frame, with the UAE reversing the trend and scoring first 8 minutes into the period via Ayrat Badegyev. Canberra Brave's Casey Kubara continued his hot streak at the tournament and responded with his second goal to even it up at 4-4, with 9 minutes remaining. Australia were forced to kill off a penalty to the Mustangs' Michael McMahon for boarding with 7 minutes to play, providing for some tense moments. The UAE would finally find the winner with 41 seconds to go, courtesy of Ilia Chuikov with his 4th and final goal of the tournament, securing the win for the UAE and the bronze medal to ensure they would stay in Division 2A next year in their first outing. Melbourne Ice's Mac Caruana and Thunder's Kieren Webster finished with 5 points (2G, 3A) a piece, with Woodman and Casey Kubara finishing with 4 points (2G, 2A) each for the tournament. Toivonen finished with a save percentage of 88.34% in the 5 starts for Australia on debut, stopping 134 of 151 shots faced. Australia’s 3-2 defeat of Iceland on Friday ensured it will stay in Division 2A in 2025, finishing on 4 points. Iceland is relegated to Division 2B which concludes tonight in Bulgaria, after they lost to Israel in their final game of the tournament. Croatia defeated Serbia in the final game and are promoted to Division 1B for 2025. The location of the 2025 IIHF Division 2A World Championships will be announced following the annual congress in May. |
