James Bay wins third straight Barnard Cup with win over Vikes
Saturday, November 26, 2011 - Submitted by Andrew Smith, BC Rugby Communications

Victoria, BC: The University of Victoria Vikes men's rugby team fell to James Bay for the third straight year, losing 22-13 in the Barnard Cup Vancouver Island men's rugby championship against James Bay on Saturday in front of over 600 fans at Centennial Stadium.

JT Rowbotham, Hugo Belanger and Dan Harlow scored first-half tries for James Bay which led 17-3 until late in the first half.

Belanger opened the scoring in the seventh minute with an uncovered try. Then after a great run of Bays possession, the visitors extended the lead to 12-0 with a try by Rowbotham converted by Jeff Williams.

Vikes kicker Patrick Kay cut the lead to 12-3 with a penalty goal in the 20th minute, but Harlow scored an unconverted try to extend the lead to 17-3 in the 30th minute.

James Bay's Adam Drury was sent off to the sin-bin for not releasing and the Vikes capitalized with a converted Brett Beukeboom try to cut the lead to 17-10 at the half.

Despite being outplayed, the Vikes were very much in the contest entering the second frame. They carried the play from the 35th to 75th minute of play, but struggled to score against a stingy James Bay defence.

In the early stages of the final half, Kay missed a penalty goal opportunity but he made up for it with a drop goal in the 66th minute to cut the lead further to 17-13 in favour of James Bay.

Rowbotham scored his second try of the day in the 80th minute to make the final 22-13.
