To paraphrase that noted philosopher Marvin Aday (aka Meat Loaf), 3 out of 4 Ain't Bad, as only one higher seed was knocked off in the first round, unlike last year when only one favorite survived its quarterfinal game.
The #7 Swingin' A's started the playoffs with a bang as they overcame a stunning 4 run comeback by the #2 Brewers in the bottom of the 7th inning (highlighted by a 3 run homer off the bat of PJ "Howdy Doody" McGrory to eventually win 13-7 in 9 innings. The A's plated 7 runs in the top of the 9th, as their jack of all trades Rich "Dr. Zeppo" Lee smashed a 3 run homer of his own to put the game out of reach.
The nigtcap on Day 1 featured the scrappy #8 seed Astros against the top-seeded Mets. The Astros continued their hitting barrage from the prior week when they plated 28 runs in their only win of the regular season, as they scored 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning. The Mets responded with 6 runs of their own in the bottom of the frame and held on for a hard-fought 10-5 victory. Both Pete "Turn Those Shorts Down" Ohanyan and Tony "I Played Sweet D, Not" Sauer made some stellar defensive plays in support of pitcher Bob "Gimpy McGimpster" Smith.
The #3 seed Pirates started off Day 2 of the quarters by breaking open a close game and cruising to a 9-2 victory over the #6 Twins. The Pirates will square off against the upstart A's in tonight's opener, while the late game will feature the Mets taking on the #4 Expos, who held on for a thrilling 5-4 triumph over the plucky Yankees. The Expos threw out 2 runners at the plate during the game and Pete "Ahhh, Where's my Glass?" Smith worked out of a 2nd & 3rd with 1 out jam in the last inning to nail down the win for the Expos. Tim "G-O-R-I-A" Goria helped keep the Yankees in the game with some fine defensive efforts.
