Norstar Men Win 2014 Provincial B Championship

Friday night at 7:00pm London played Vaughn - a very good team. Norstar took 28 minutes in penalties playing most of the game disadvantaged. Norstar goalie #33 Randy Kilburn kept the score but London lost 4 - 0.

Later Friday night at 10:00pm London played North West Toronto. Norstar vowed to adjust their style of play in game 2 as they knew they had to win to have any chance continuing in the tournament. Again - London fell behind 2 - 0 only 4 minutes into the game. Then history was witnessed. London scored 5 goals on 5 shots in 65 seconds. At 10:05 #8 Kyle Provily scored from #12 Assistant Captain Jason Skinner. 15 seconds later #81 Todd Holloway scored from #18 Assistant Captain Michael Gillen. 33 seconds later #61 Assistant Captain Aaron Dartch scored Holloway and #17 Kraig Wright. 7 seconds later #23 Iain Downs scored from Wright and #47 Brandon Greenside. Then 10 seconds later Dartch scored his second goal from Downs and Wright. Norstar goalie Randy Kilburn stopped 21 of 24 shots. London won the game 5 - 3.

Saturday morning - with a bench of only 8 players - London lost to Durham 10 - 3. Although the game scored was one-sided. London was in the game until late in period 1 when the score was 3 - 3 until amassing numerous penalties leading to 2 player ejections shortening the bench further. After the game the Norstar players again regrouped and vowed to get to the next round. "We were in that game and we can handle Durham. It had nothing to do with our short bench. We lost our focus and embarrassed ourselves and London. If we tie or win our next game we move onto the Semi Finals." - David Dudzic, General Manager and Lead Coach.

Saturday early afternoon - with a full and refocused bench - Norstar faced Ingersoll. The game was well played by both teams. Norstar goalie Randy Kilburn stole the game as he saved all 26 shots faced - many spectacular - earning a 0 - 0 tie and advancing Norstar to the Semi Finals vs #1 seed Durham.

The Semi Final game was much different than the first game played between the two teams. Norstar opened the scoring at the 7:00 mark of the first period with a goal from Kraig Wright assisted by Captain #14 Mark Landon. Durham then tied the game 3 minutes later. With 36 seconds left in period 1 Durham took a 2 - 1 lead. Norstar's #11 Rob Carreiro tied the game 2 - 2 assisted by #23 Kyle Robinson only 27 seconds later gaining momentum into period 2. Norstar's #27 Mike Kowalik scored the game winner on a stellar one-time set up blast from Carreiro. London's Randy Kilburn stopped 25 of 27 shots - again many spectacular - leading Norstar to the final and avenging an earlier bad loss.

The Finals had Norstar vs Vaughn. The London Norstar team was dressing room ready and wanted to win this game. London opened the scoring from defenceman Mike Kowalik with a blast from the point assisted from Kyle Robinson. After Vaughan took a 2 - 1 lead London's Captain Mark Landon tied the game a 2 -2 with assists from Brandon Greenside and Iain Downs. Vaughn took a 3 -2 lead into period 2. At 9:53 of period 2 Norstar's Mark Landon scored his second goal assisted by Downs tying the game at 3 -3. Then - with under 4 minutes left in the game London's Aaron Dartch scored on a great set up from #9 Ryan Stephenson and Brandon Greenside. The game ended dramatically with London taking 2 penalties and Vaughan pulling their goalie making it a 6 on 3. Norstar defenders outlasted numerous blocked shots and a frenzy of passing to win the game 4 - 3 earning Norstar their first Provincial Championship.
