Ste. Rose Royals
Slow start costly for Royals on the road

If the Peguis Juniors had revenge on their minds when the Ste. Rose Royals came to visit on Friday, they certainly acted upon it.
The Juniors suffered their only regulation loss of the season at the hands of the Royals, Oct. 28.

On Friday in Fisher Branch, the Juniors showed why they are one of the top teams in the Keystone Junior Hockey League, scoring six goals in the first period en route to a 12-3 win. Cody Zulyniak led the Juniors with four goals and three assists, while Wayne Folster had two goals and four assists. Aaron Sinclair and Cole Murdock also had two goals for Peguis, with singles coming from Dwight Sutherland and Grant Sutherland.

Riley Johnston with two and Jarrett Day scored for Ste. Rose.
Shane McPherson made 36 saves to record the win, while Deagan Delaurier stopped 63 shots for the Royals. Royals coach Bryan Luke said the Royals got off to a bad start, reflected in the offensive outburst by the Juniors.

“Everybody was on their own page and when  you’re on your own page, that’s what’s going to happen,” he said. The Royals iced a lineup with only 14 skaters due to injuries and illness. But Luke did not want to use that as an excuse. “It was a tough go when you only have three lines and five D. But that’s going to happen and you just have to go with it,” he said.

The Royals improved in the second period, firing 21 shots at McPherson, after managing just seven in the first period. Luke said the middle frame was the team’s best of the game. “We stuck to what we wanted to do. Being short staffed, we would think defence first and if opportunities would  come, then we would jump on them,” he said.
“But we didn’t want to force too much and we kind of stuck with defence first. We did that in the second period. We had some chances that we missed and who knows what could have happened.”
One aspect of the Royals’ game that has not been a problem all season is the team’s discipline. Peguis only had one power play in the contest.

“That is one thing that we’ve really been working on and really stressing. Obviously, we’re in a building year here, but we also don’t want to have any undisciplined situations. And, for the most part, we’ve been great in that situation,” Luke said. “The last few games we’ve only had a handful of penalties. You don’t mind penalties that are action penalties. But it’s been good in that way that we’ve been holding our discipline.”

Sunday’s game against the Lundar?Falcons was postponed to due poor road conditions and will be made up at a later date.
