New Power Point System Approved

The power point formula used to determine seedings and eligiblity for the NJSIAA Football Sectional Tournaments has been revised for the 2009 season.

As with the old power point system, only the first eight games count toward playoff eligibility, teams must win at least four games and at least six of those eight games must be against New Jersey schools.  The eight teams with the most power points in each section will advance to the tournament.

Power points under the system will be calculated using quality points, group points, and residual points.

Schools recieve six quality points for a win and three for a tie.  No quality points will be given for a loss.

Group points are given whether schools win or lose the game.  Playing a Group IV school gives four group points, playing a Group III school gives three group points, and so on.

Three residual points are earned for each school a defeated opponent beats.

For example, if Montgomery (with a hypothetical 6-2 record) beats Bridgewater-Raritan (7-1), Montgoery would earn 31 points.  (Six points for the win,  four group points, and 21 residual points)

The old system took doubled group size plus one residual point for a win.  No points were earned in a loss.

The system was proposed by Montgomery High School.
