December Recap

December Recap

Moira Bryan

The Wolves had a light schedule in December, playing just four games in three weekends. They played the Calgary Titans, Central Alberta Amazons, Fort Saskatchewan Fury, and Sherwood Park Steele and went 4-0-0 this month to finish off the calendar year.

The Wolves took the first of two road trips this month on Saturday Dec. 3 and travelled to Calgary to play the Calgary Titans. #88 Talia Teliani quickly opened the scoring by winning a net-front battle and getting the puck in the net. Just over a minute later #24 Kate Macpherson scored to advance the Wolves lead. Later in the period, #17 Bree Edwards scored off of a solo rush by beating the Titans defence. In the second period, #7 Nayha Johal won a net-front battle and was able to put the puck past the Titans goaltender. On the penalty kill, #5 Claudine Boucher got a breakaway and went bar-down to add to the Wolves' lead. The Wolves then had a couple of back-to-back power plays which resulted in back-to-back power play goals from #25 Rory Bothwell as she walked across the top of the circle and rifled it top corner, and also from Teliani who put in a loose puck in the crease. Before the period was over, the Titans got another power play and were able to capitalize on this one by scoring their first goal of the game. The Wolves opened the scoring in the third period with a shot from the top of the circle from #12 Jacqueline Cowling. The Wolves ran into some more penalty trouble in the third, and the Titans were able to score another power play goal and then an even strength goal to begin some sort of come back. It was thwarted minutes later as #44 Abby Fonteyne went on a rush and scored five-hole. The Titans scored one more goal before the end of the period but the Wolves won the game 9-4! #30 Andrea Peric stopped 18 of 22 shots on the back end.

On Saturday Jan. 10 the Wolves took their second road trip of the month and travelled to Penhold to take on the Central Alberta Amazons. Both teams battled hard right off the bat until Edwards opened the scoring halfway through the period where she got her own rebound off of a rush chance. The Amazons opened the scoring late in the second period and tied the game, with their first goal coming with less than five minutes left in the period. The Wolves quickly put themselves back on top with another goal by Edwards who banged in a beautiful feed into the slot. In the third, Edwards scored her third goal of the game and solidified a hat trick less than five minutes into the period. Both teams battled hard for the rest of the period but the Wolves went on to take it 3-1. #31 Paige Thomas turned aside 15 of 16 shots in aiding the team in getting the win.

The Wolves faced off against the Fort Saskatchewan Fury at home on Saturday Dec. 17. The Wolves soon got a power play opportunity and #22 Grace Flanagan was able to score the first goal of the game. The Fury answered back soon after with a power play goal of their own to tie the game at one. With one minute left in the period, Edwards scored to give the Wolves the lead, however, the Fury were able to score another power play goal with just four seconds left in the period to leave the period tied at two. The Wolves opened the scoring just one minute in to the second period as Macpherson scored an ice-burner on the rush. A minute later, the Fury were able to answer back and keep the game tied. Later in the period, #8 Payden Bialowas scored to give the Wolves the lead, yet again. In the third period, the Fury opened the scoring three minutes in and were able to tie the game again. Later in the period, Teliani scored a beautiful tip to give the Wolves yet another lead. But with two minutes left in the game, Edwards scored another to solidify the Wolves' lead. Peric turned aside 6 of 9 shots faced and Thomas stopped 10 of 11 to help the Wolves win 6-4!

On Sunday Dec. 18 and in their last game of the calendar year, the Wolves headed out to Ardrossan in their Christmas sweaters to take on the Sherwood Park Steele. Both teams battled hard through the first but the score remained goose eggs on both sides after one period of play. One minute into the second period, Cowling opened the scoring with a shot from the point. A minute later, #15 Tyra Anderson tipped a shot past the Steele net minder. Then #18 Tessa Ross scored another from the point just a couple of minutes later. The Steele were able to answer back with a goal of their own. Later in the period, Edwards scored off of a pass into the slot. Both teams battled hard through the third period, but it wasn't until less than one minute left the Edwards was able to score two more goals, one even strength and one on the power play to get her second hat trick of the month and seal the win for the Wolves. Thomas made 17 saves on 18 shots and the Wolves won 6-1!

After capping off a successful year with a successful month, the Wolves are looking forward to January. With only eight games left in the season, the time to ramp up the intensity and start playing playoff hockey is now. The Wolves are looking forward to continuing their game play and getting even stronger, individually and as a team. Their first game back after the break is against Fort Saskatchewan Fury on Sunday Jan. 7 at Castledowns at 6:00 p.m. We hope to see you there!
