Pacific Coast Hockey Academy

Pacific Coast Hockey Academy Director Kelly Shields has announced the Head Coaching staff for the upcoming 2020-21 season.

U18 Prep: Jason Becker

“I am excited to announce the hiring of Jason Becker as our new U18 Prep Head Coach,” said Shields. “To have to opportunity to add someone with Jason’s extensive playing and coaching background to our staff at PCHA was a no-brainer. Jason has a wealth of coaching experience, and I look forward to working with him as he injects some new blood and fresh ideas into our program. He will be a valuable asset to our program and coaching staff”.

Jason is familiar with the CSSHL having spent last season as the Head Coach of St. Georges U18 Prep team, and previously coached at the Okanagan Hockey Academy.

Jason played four years in WHL and was named captain of the Swift Current Broncos, before moving on to play at the University of Saskatchewan where he earned an Arts and Science Degree in Human Geography. Following his time at University, Becker made the move to Europe where he played professionally for nine seasons before returning home to Canada to start his coaching career.

Becker has extensive Junior hockey coaching experience, including five years as an assistant coach with the Prince George Cougars of the WHL, and three seasons with the Penticton Vees of the BCHL. During his time in Penticton, the Vees captured three Interior Division championships, were two-time Interior Division Champions, in addition to winning the BCHL Regular Season championship and a BCHL Championship.

Becker has also been actively involved in the BC High Performance Program since 2010 – including assistant coach for Team BC at the BC Winter Games and WHL Cup, as well as Head Coach of Team Pacific at the U-17 World Hockey Challenge.

Becker will be joined on the bench by Associate Head Coach Kelly Shields who will be stepping down as Head Coach after seven seasons.

“I have been wanting to take a step back from full-time coaching the last couple of years to spend more time focusing on my role as Director, but needed to ensure the program was in experienced and capable hands before making that move,” said Shields. “Hiring Jason allows me the freedom to focus on the business while still being on the bench and actively involved in all three of our teams.”

U16 Prep: Greg Smith

Smith will be entering his fourth season at PCHA and his third as head coach of the U16 Prep team.

Greg’s playing career highlights including playing professional in Europe, as well as in three different IIHF inline hockey world championships with Team Canada, capturing gold in 2008 and playing his junior hockey with the Victoria Cougars.

Greg has over 14 years of high-level coaching experience, including a three-year stint as assistant coach and skills coach for the BCHL’s Victoria Grizzlies.

“Greg is a hard-working coach and valuable employee,” said Shields. “He sets a high standard for his team and student athletes, and always keeps them honest.”

U15 Prep: Dan Bell

Dan Bell returns for his fifth season at PCHA and third season at the helm of the U15 Prep team.

After setting the league all-time record for career points in the VIJHL, Daniel continued on to Castleton University, playing four years of NCAA hockey and earning a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Dan was named team captain his senior year and earned a NCSA All-American Player of the Year and Academic All-American awards. After college he took his game to Europe playing two years of professional hockey in France.

“Dan is a very structured and well-prepared coach,” said Shields. “He does a great job at teaching the fundamentals to our young athletes.”

Head of Player Development/Skills Coach: Mark Kosick

Heading into his sixth season with PCHA, Mark returns in his role as Head of Player Development and Skills coach.

Mark played his Junior A hockey for the Victoria Salsa of the BCHL earning a scholarship to the University of Michigan where he won a NCAA Div.1 National Championship. Following his Freshman season, Mark was selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL Entry Draft.

After college Mark went on to play 14 years of professional hockey in North America and Germany before moving back home to Victoria with his family

Mark provides consistency within the Academy as he is on the ice five days a week with all three PCHA teams. His position provides management of special teams and daily communication with student athletes.

“Mark is an invaluable asset to our academy,” said Shields. “He holds our student athletes accountable for their personal development on a daily basis.”

Recruiting and Scouting Coordinator: Rod Holt

“We are very excited to welcome Rod aboard,” said Shields “He has been a strong supporter of our program over the years - he is passionate about player development and has a keen eye for identifying talent.

Rod has a long coaching and scouting background – including scouting at U15 and U16 as a District Evaluator for BC Hockey, scout for International Scouting Services, BCHL Surrey Eagles, and the past five seasons as the BC Regional Scout for the WHL’s Victoria Royals.

“I am very excited about being a Sea Devil and looking forward to working with the families and athletes in helping them achieve their hockey and beyond dreams,” said Holt. “I have always admired the program; I want to help build a winning culture here at PCHA. I believe it is the best place for young talent to come and develop into WHL, BCHL, professional athletes, and ultimately good citizens and young men.”
