Weekend Wrap-up January 7

Weekend Wrap-up January 7

The CHL

Game Summary

This past weekend the Stony Plain Eagles played host to the Cremona Coyotes, officially kicking off the back half of the 2022-2023 regular season. Both teams were looking to shake off the rust from the Christmas break and come out with a bang. Stony Plain was looking to gain top spot in the league in what has been a back and forth battle with Innisfail. While Cremona was looking to keep building on its game and secure their first points.

The first period saw Stony control the majority of the play. Scoring was kicked off by Wil Tomchuk from Elkow and Switzer followed shortly after by Lee Gadoury on a nice tip off a pass from Nault. The first period saw shots favor the home team 16-5. With the Eagles getting 2 PP chances while Cremona would get just the single PP chance. At the end of the first the score stood 2-0 for Stony Plain.

Period two would see three goals from Stony Plain. Bryce Williamson from Galbraith and Doucette would open scoring in the period. Followed by an unassisted goal by Sean Nault to make it 4-0. A Chinook Hockey League first, as Brandon Switzer would convert a beauty one timer from Elkow, scoring his first career CHL goal. This would make it 5-0 Eagles, where the score would end up after two. Shots after two would stand 28-11 in favor of the hosts. Stony Plain would end up with 2 PP for the period while Cremona would not see the man advantage.

The third period would see Chad Hohmann score from Ceh and Gallimore. Gallimore was returning from some time off served due to a suspension he picked up early in the year. This would make it 6-0 Stony Plain. Jordan Pink would get another on the board for Stony Plain from Smith and Switzer, pushing the score up to 7-0. Stony Plain would not see any man advantage time in the third, Cremona would pick up one PP in the period. Eric Szudor would pick up the win and shut out, turning away all 19 shots he faced.

Next up for Cremona they travel to Innisfail on January 21. For Stony Plain they also travel to Innisfail on January 14th for this upcoming weekends CHL matchup. With the win Stony Plain moves to 5-1-1 good enough for first place in the CHL. While Cremona falls to 0-7-0 still searching for results.
