St.Margaret's Master Hockey League
Masters League Born
- Submitted by
The St. Margaret's Masters League was started in the spring of 1994 by a group of individuals,Peter Russell, Duane VanSnick, Bill Estabrooks, George Knowles, Earl Luffman and Jimmy Young, who met at Bill Estabrooks' home. This group of young men (at heart), were looking to form a league (45+), and in October of 1994,with the help of Vernon Kynock Trucking, who sponsored the league with sweaters and socks, the league played its first hockey game at the St.Margaret's Arena. As time passed,so did the age of the hockey players, the league had to increase its age to (50+),so that these players could continue to play. From then on,Monday nights became a night for old and new players to meet. Every year the league has a draft and players may or may not play on the same team with the same players each season. In 1994, Dickie Doubleday, who played nets, became ill and passed away,so was unable to play in this fun league. This league remembers Dickie every year with an award which was donated by his family. This award is given to the player who shows the ( true spirit of hockey - plays the game for the fun of it). Henry Haverstock was the first player to receive this award. This league is now in its 8th season and is still as much fun as it was on opening night in October 1994.
