Nanaimo, B.C.


Nanaimo is the second-largest city on Vancouver Island, after the provincial capital of Victoria. One of the longest shorelines in Canada can be found here but there is also a vibrant downtown entertainment and shopping area that is popular with locals and tourists alike.

The population of Nanaimo is about 84,000 with the pulp and paper industry accounting for a considerable chunk of the local economy. With an urban setting and proximity to outdoor pursuits such as hiking, skiing and golf, Nanaimo offers something for all tastes.

Nanaimo is served by three newspapers (Nanaimo Daily NewsNanaimo News Bulletin and Harbour City Star), and radio stations CHWF-FM (The Wolf) and CKWV-FM (The Wave). Vancouver Island University is also located in Nanaimo giving the city a college-town appeal.

The city is also famous for the Nanaimo Bar - you can actually take a self-guided tour to sample different versions of this popular dessert treat.

Driving Instructions:

Nanaimo is located along Hwy-1 (TransCanada) on the east coast of Vancouver Island, approx. 110 km north of Victoria.

From Victoria: Hwy-1 (TransCanada)/Island Highway/Hwy-19A north approx. 115 km to Bowen Rd. (approx. 7 km north of Comox Rd. in Nanaimo). Turn left on Bowen Rd. and proceed south approx. 0.5 km to Beban Park Complex on the left.

From Vancouver: Take the 1.5 hour BC Ferries from Horseshoe Bay (West Vancouver) to Nanaimo's Departure Bay Terminal on Vancouver Island. From the terminal, follow Brechin Rd. west approx. 1 km to Hwy-19A (Island Highway). Turn right on Hwy-19A (Island Hwy.) and proceed north approx. 3 km to Bowen Road. Turn left on Bowen Rd. and proceed south approx. 0.5 km to Beban Park Complex on the left.
