August 4, 2007

Dear SVIBA Summer Select Team Players,

I hope you are enjoying your summer break and the warm weather which has replaced our wet spring.

The South Vancouver Island Basketball Association’s Juvenile girls select team returned home from its summer tour August 1 to conclude this summer’s successful select team program. The SVIBA Juvenile team returned home from its two-week U. S. tour to Colorado Springs and San Diego with a 10 win-3 loss record which included winning the 32-team all-star bracket tournament in Colorado Springs.

This summer the SVIBA Youth, Development and Midget teams each played 18 games, the Junior and Senior teams each played 23 games and the Juvenile Team played 33 games. With these six teams, 77 local area girls had the opportunity to play basketball this spring and summer which achieves one of the SVIBA’s primary goals for this program.

During the Juvenile Team’s summer tours (July 5-12 and July 19-August 1), the team played many of the top high-school players and club teams in the western United States as listed in various scouting magazines and the USA Today daily newspaper. The highlight of this summer’s competitions was the Juvenile Team’s tour of  Colorado and California with tournament stops at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and the University of San Diego in San Diego where the team competed in two of the biggest tournaments held in the western U. S. at the excellent university facilities on both campuses.

The off-court highlights this summer were many and they included the following:

·         - team bowling in Oregon City and the team golf tourney at Henderson Park
·         - visit to Seattle’s Pike Place Market
·         - trip to the Garden of the Gods National Park
·         - a drive to the top of Pike’s Peak mountain
·         - trip to the U. S. Olympic Training Centre in Colorado Springs
·         - trip to Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure Park
·         - trip to Knott’s Berry Farm Amusement Park
·         - watching a San Diego Padres baseball game at Petco Field
·         - trips to the popular Venice Beach in Los Angeles and Mission Bay Beach in
            San Diego
·         - shopping at every popular tourist area and major mall in Anaheim,
Seattle, Portland, Colorado Springs and San Diego

We hope the younger players on our SVIBA teams will want to continue playing in our program next summer and perhaps play with one of these teams again when they make their annual summer tours which are now currently being planned. We are planning, subject to the final number of girls attending the annual FAB 50 Camp, to offer the same team alignments next season as we did this past season: Youth with girls in grades 6-7, Development with girls in grades 7-8, Midget with girls in grade 8, Junior with girls in grade 9, Senior with girls in grades 10-11 and Juvenile with girls in grades 9-11.

Planning for the SVIBA spring and summer programs next year is proceeding extremely well at this time as we have already been able to confirm many dates for events. Please take note of the following dates for next spring which we have now confirmed:

·         - Monday, March 31 – Youth Girls (grades 6-8) Run and Gun signup
·         - Wednesday, April 2 – Junior /Open Women Run and Gun signup
·         - Saturday, April 5 – 21st Annual Seniors Classic All-Star Games
- all these events will be hosted at St. Margaret’s School Gym

·         - Saturday/Sunday, April 26-27 – 16th Annual FAB 50 Girls Camp
·         - Saturday/Sunday, May 24-25 – 11th Annual Island Women’s Showcase
·         - Saturday/Sunday, May 31-June 1 – 17th Annual Island Summer Shootout
·         - Saturday/Sunday, June 28-29 – 13th Annual Canadian Summer Tipoff

We will also ask girls who played on the SVIBA Juvenile, Senior and Junior teams to help with coaching in the Run and Gun Youth Girls Division on Monday nights. We pair the coaches together with each pair being responsible for coaching one of the teams and it is something the girls who previously participated have really enjoyed doing each year.
