Spartan Gets Hitched
The Spartans would like to congradulate Drew and Erika Roberts on their marriage this past weekend. The night went off without any problems: "No cell phone use", "No licking stamps", "No Tricky Let's Go", " No Postman", "No one showing up late with a special suit on", and "No one winning the Hulk going home pool". Hopefully this means one more fan in the stands next season bringing the Spartans season ticket holders up to 5.

Spartans Add New Edition
The Spartans wish to congradulate Greg Hannah and his wife Elisha on the birth of their first child. When asked how it went "Greg's quote was she is healthy and I knew she was a girl before she came......why else would she pick a game night to be born". Also of note the Spartans are glad that the doc had better hands then Greg otherwise there would have been new meaning to the term bouncing baby girl. All the best Hannah family.

Season Ends
The Spartans season ended with an 8-6 loss to the Oshawa Royals Tuesday night. Rich Murer took the mound for the Spartans, after surrendering four runs in the first inning he settled down and let the Spartans offense take over. The offense responded with two runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a Drew Roberts 2 run home run. Then in the bottom of the second the Spartans scored 4 more to take a 6-4 lead thanks to an RBI single by Damon Draper, RBI single by Shane Moore, a past ball, and another RBI single by Jason Graham. The lead held until the top of the sixth when once again the Royals scored four runs to take a 8-6 lead. The Spartans had their chances to mound a comeback but could not get the timely hit they needed. Thus ends the Spartans 2006 season. Be on the watch for the annual Xmas dinner, poker games, and the 2nd annual poker tournament.

Spartans Down Pioneers
Jason Graham took the ball again for the Spartans on Monday looking to avenge an earlier 9-2 loss to the Pioneers. The Spartans would be in tough in this do or die game because Markham was throwing their ace Mark Cheeseman. The first five innings blew by as both pitchers dominated, then the Spartans offense scored five unanswered runs aided by a few Pioneer errors during the inning. That left Jason Graham to shut the door on the Pioneers, which he did. The win gave the Spartans a chance to get a buy into the final but unfortunately did not win the toss, thus the Spartans have to play the Oshawa Royals Tuesday night in Oshawa.

Spartans Still In The Hunt
The Spartans are still alive in their quest to three-peat as EOBA champions, even though they again suffered a first round lost. Game one of the tournament saw Jason Graham take the mound for the Spartans. The game was a pitcher's dual for four until the Spartans gave up five unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. In the top of the inning the Spartans tried a comeback but were unable to get more then one run accross leaving the bases loaded. RIck Dwinnell came on to finish up the game surrounding four more runs giving the Pioneers a 9-2 win. Of note for the game were: Jason Graham almost biting through his tongue and Rich Murer shooting down a rare pitch hit appearance. In game two the Spartans took on the Kendal Eagles, Mark Sarson took the ball for the Spartans. The game was bacck & forth for the first couple of innings and then the Spartans put the game out of reach 10-5. That would put the Spartans up against the Whitby Canadians in a rematch of last year's final. Rich Murer took the ball for the Spartans and pitched a gem. The offense having spotted Rich a two run lead, Rich did not give up a run until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Canadians tied the game up at 2-2. IN the top of the seventh the Spartans responded with another run leaving RIch to finish the seventh for the win, the game came down to a man on second and two gone. The Canadians hitter laced a single to left, where RIck Dwinnell promptly picked it up and fired a perfect strike to Shane Moore getting the Whitby runner by at least five feet. That meant the Spaqrtans would make it to Sunday to once again faced the Markham Pioneers, unfortunately the weather did not co-operate forcing games to be moved to the GTA area for the semi-finals. The Spartans will take on the Pioneers and the Oshawa Royals will take on the Thornhill both on Monday, with the finals being played on Tuesday. Game results to follow.

Spartans Win 2 In a Row
The Spartans ended the regular season by beating the Port Hope Flyers and the Markham Pioneers. The Spartans last action of the season will be the EOBA play-off tournament. The Spartans will be looking to three-peat.

August 10, 2006
Pioneers Down Spartans
The Markham Pioneers got all they needed off Spartans starter Mark Sarson in the top of the third inning, as they jumped out to an 7-1 lead. After that the Spartans trio of Brad Binns, Justin Recon, and Rick Dwinnell held the Pioneers to 3 runs. The Spartans offense could only muster up five runs, but once again had their chances to score more but did not. The defense also made several errors in the field that did not help the Spartans pitchers out. The Spartans next game is Sunday Aug 13th, game time 7:30pm at the Ajax Sportsplex as the Spartans take on the Port Hope Flyers.

August 6, 2006
Spartans Lose Two at Elim's
The Spartans started the annual elimination tournament against Leaside. Jason Graham took the ball for the Spartans and pitched well, keeping the Spartans in the game. Leaside jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Rich Iantria singled home a run. Then in the top of the seventh Shane Moore hit a two run home run to tie the game. Unfortunately Leaside responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. That meant that the Spartans would have to take on the St. Catharine's Metro's in a do or die game. Nat Ogborne started for the Spartans but had control problems and actually left the game without giving up a hit but down 1-0, Daryl Noble came on with the bases loaded and got the Spartans out of the inning with the Spartans only down 3-0. Once again Shane Moore started the comeback for the Spartans in the top of the fifth with a two run single. Unfortunately that is where the offense ended, thus leaving the Spartans 0-2. The Spartans next action is Wednesday August 9th as the Markham Pioneers visit Ajax, game time 7:30pm.

August 3, 2006
Spartans end on a sour note
The Spartans travelled to Port Hope for their final tune up before the eliminations. Resting their pitching staff Rick Dwinnell made his mound debut and pitched fairly well giving up 4 runs, he was picked up by Justin Recon for 1 1/2 innings before the skies released the light show causing the game to be called. The Spartans offense could only manage 3 runs before the game being called but did hit the ball very well. The Spartans next action is on Friday in Windsor as the Spartans take on the Leaside Leafs in first round action at the eliminations.

August 2, 2006
Reds seem Blue
The Spartans handed the Thornhill Reds their 3rd straight loss as the Spartans won 9-5. The win was the Spartans fourth in a row. Rich Murer got the win on the mound for the Spartans with Shane Moore pitching the final 4 frames to round out the pitching. The offense was lead by Jason Graham who hit a 3 run home run. In the field the Spartans did not look sharp making several errors. Up next for the is a trip to Port Hope to take on the Flyers in the Spartans final tune up before the eliminations.

July 31, 2006
Spartans Sweep Reds
The Spartans took both games of an afternoon double-header against the Thornhill Reds (6-5 in extras & 9-5). Game one took a few extra innings but the Spartans finally scored in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a game ending bases loaded single by Shane Moore. Jason Graham got the win pitching 2 innings in relief of starter Daryl Noble. In game 2 the Spartans stumbled out of the gate going down 5-1 but responded with 6 unanswered runs to take a 7-5 lead. Jason Graham come on for Brad Binns to pick up his second win of the day. The sweep puts the Spartans one game over .500 for the year. This weeks schedule has the Spartans with stops in Thornhill Tuesday and Port Hope Wednesday. Then the Spartans travel to Windsor for the annual elimination tournament.

July 27, 2006
Spartans Down The Candians
The Spartans took on the Whitby Canadians on Wednesday night and came away with a 6-2 victory. Brad Binns picked up for the win for the Spartans giving up 2 runs over 6 innings. Shane Moore picked up for Brad after that and pitched 3 scoreless innings. The Spartans offense could not muster much off of Canadians starter Tim Wakefield, but took advantage of a couple of errors by the Canadians. The Spartans also played an error free game for the first time in recent weeks. The Spartans next action will be on Sunday July 30th against the Thornhill Reds, as the Spartans look to sweep the double-header to even the season series. Game time is 1pm at the Ajax Sportsplex.

July 24, 2006
Spartans Lose To Ponies
What started out a nice day turn real ugly real quick. The Spartans only completed 5 1/2 innings of game 1 of their double-header against the Kingston Ponies, losing 4-2. Once again the Spartans couldn't come up with the timely hit that could have broken the game open. Mark Sarson took the loss even though he pitched well after giving up a two run home run in the first. The Spartans next action is at home against the Whitby Cnadians on Wednesday July 26th, game time is 7:30pm at the Ajax Sportsplex.

July 21, 2006
Spartans Ground The Eagles
The Spartans took to the field last Wednesday against the Kendal Eagles and took advantage of a team that had just played four games over the weekend. The final result of the game was 15-2 as the Spartans won quite handily. The Spartans next action will be a home double-header versus the Kingston Ponies on Sunday July 23rd.

Schedule Addition
The Spartans have added another game to their schedule. On August 1st the Spartans will take on the Thornhill Reds at Bishop's Cross field in Thornhill.

July 17, 2006
Spartans 1-2 in St. Kitt's
The Spartans played two very tough opponets to start the Hap Walters tournament. In game one the Spartans took on the Erindale Cardinals and lost 7-5. Mark Sarson took the loss on the mound for the Spartans. Offensively the Spartans were led by Drew Roberts who hit a 2-run home and also remodeled an Honda Accord. In game two the Spartans took on the defending Ontario champions Windsor Stars. The game was tied going into the sixth inning thanks to timely hitting by Rick Dwinnell and Jason Graham. But the Spartans defense was not stellar giving the Stars two runs and making a tough luck loser out of starter Jason Graham. Next up for the Spartans were the Barrie Red Sox, having had to hang around after knowing they were eliminated the Spartans came out with very little emotion. The Red Sox tallied three in the first and carried that lead until the Spartans came back to take the lead in the seventh. Rich Murer got the win on the mound and also got the game tying hit in the seventh inning. The seventh inning also saw Spartans first baseman Damon Draper get hit in the face with a pitch, reports state that nothing was broken, but that Damon will be starting a new diet at least for the next couple of weeks. The Spartans next action will be Wednesday July 19th as the Spartans take on the Kendal Eagles.

July 12, 2006
Game Cancelled
The Spartans were suppose to take on the Whitby Canadians on Wednesday July 12th, but mother nature did not co-operate therefore cancelling the game. A make up date will be announced, the Spartans next action will be at the Hap Walters tournament in St. Catharines. The Spartans will be in tough will games against the Erindale Cardinals, Windsor Stars, and Barrie Red Sox.

July 9, 2006
Ponies Sweep Spartans
The Spartans travelled to Kingston on Saturday to take on the Ponies. The short benched Spartans lost game one 4-3, as Jason Graham took the loss. Jason was not deserving of the loss, his defense let him down, as infielders were using skillets as gloves, outfielders forgot their maps, and the hitters couldn't not recover from the bad defense. Offensively the Spartans were lead by Shane Moore (3-hits) and Jason Graham (2-hits). In game 2 Brad Binns took the ball, he was spotted an early 2-0 lead but the Ponies scored 5 unanswered runs to take the game 5-2. The Spartans tried to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth, the loaded the bases with one out but Rick Dwinnell lined into a double play. The defense played better, but the offense could not get the timely hit. The Spartans looked to get back on track Wednesday July 12th, as the Whitby Canadians come to Ajax for a 7:30pm start. This will be the final tune up game before the Spartans travel to St. Catherine's to take part in the annual Hap Walters tournament, details to follow.

June 28, 2006
Rained Out
The Spartans and Eagles tried to get in their game on Wednesday but mother nature did not co-operate, as she hit the field with terrential rain at the start of the fifth inning. A make up date for the game will be announced in the future. Next up for the Spartans is a date with the Kingston Ponies in Kingston on July 8th for an afternoon double-header

June 25, 2006
Spartans Down The Canadians
The Spartans travelled to Whitby on Sunday to take on the Canadians. Looking to once again get back to even for the season, the Spartans jumped out to an early 5-0 lead thanks to home runs by Jason Graham and Rich Iantria. The trio of Mark Sarson, Rich Murer, and Brad Binns held the Canadians in check most of the night with Rich Murer picking up the win. Offensively the Spartans were led by Shane Moore (3/5) and Jamie Couture(4/6). Defensively the Spartans had problems with the twlight leading to a couple of Canadians runs but other then that they were steady. The Spartans next action will be at home on June 28th as the Spartans take on the Kendal Eagles.

June 20, 2006
Spartans Lose A Close One
The Spartans travelled to Thornhill on Tuesday to take on the Reds. It was a very close game throughout with the Reds jumping out to a 2-0 lead. The Spartans chipped away and eventually tied the game 2-2. The Spartans looked to take the lead at a play at the plate, but Greg Hannah was called out. Apparently having control of the ball is defined by juggling it against your chest, tagging the runner with your glove minus the ball. The Spartans could not response after that and the Reds scored 2 more runs to tag Daryl Noble with the loss. Offensively the Spartans were led by Justin Recon and Jason Graham (2 hits each). Defensively the Spartans started to play better but still made some costly mental errors. From the bench a lesson was learnt, do not make a jokes about Thornhill players juggling game balls on the bench when the umpire needs them. The Spartans look once again to even their season record at .500 as they travel to Whiby Sunday June 26th to take on the Canadians, game time is 7:30pm at Portage park in Whitby.

June 18, 2006
Spartans Sweep Royals
The Spartans took to the field for a Father's Day double-header against the Kendal Royals, looking for the sweep to get back to .500 for the season. The first inning set the tone for what would be a long afternoon. The Spartans scored nine runs in the first inning and never looked back. The final scores for the day were 18-2 and 10-1. Offensively the Spartans bats finally woke up with Shane Moore, Jason Graham, and Adam Hill all going long for the Spartans. Shane Moore and Rich Murer both got wins on the afternoon, benefitting from a lot of run support. The defensive still needs some work but was looking better. The Spartans next action will be Tuesday June 20th as the Spartans once again travel to Thornhill to take on the Reds.

June 17, 2006
Spartans Comeback Falls Short
The Spartans traveled to Thornhill on the 17th to take on the Reds. The game started out very poorly for the Spartans, as the Reds piled up 8 runs in the first two innings of starter Mark Sarson. Jason Graham took over for Mark in the 5th inning and the Spartans mounded their comeback. Down 2 runs in the top of the eigth the Spartans rallied to score 2, unfortunately they could not complete the comeback as the Reds scored in the bottom of the ninth to take the game 10-9. Overall it was not a bad showing for the Spartans who only had nine players at the game. Defensively the Spartans were not at the top of their game commiting several errors. Offensively the Spartans were lead by Rick Dwinnell who went 4 for 4 (2 singles, double, and a home run) with a Sac fly (scoring the tying run), Shane Moore hitting his first home run of the season, and Trevor Robertson hitting a 2-run home run. The Spartans look to rebound quickly as the have a Father's Day double-header in Ajax against the Kendal Royals.

June 13, 2006
Spartans Draw the Leafs
The Spartans found out who there first round game will be against at the annual Ontario Elimination Tournament on Monday. Their first game will be against the Leaside Leafs, Leafs currently sit 2nd in the GTBL league and will provide the Spartans all they can handle. More information about the Elimination tournament will be posted in the future, as the Spartans gear up for the tournament on the August long weekend (Aug 4th to 7th).

June 11, 2006
Spartans Lose To Pioneers
The did not start off well for Spartans starter Rich Murer, he surrendered 6 runs in the first two innings before handing the ball off to Darryl Noble. Daryl and Bryan Smith held the Pioneers in check from that point on, waiting for the Spartans offense to come to life. But the offense could not manage much off the Pioneers starter, who was also helped by several double plays including one of the hi-light variety. The Spartans look to even there record at 5-5 this Saturday June 17th as they travel to Bishop's Cross to take on the Thornhill Reds.

June 10, 2006
Spartans Split Double-Header
THe Spartans travelled to Kendal to take on the Eagles this past Saturday. In game one the Spartans lost 7-3, Brad Binns taking the loss with an assist going to some very shotty defense giving up a few unearned runs. The game did feature some fine hitting by Neil Blewett with a double and a home run accounting for most of the Spartans offense. Game 2 was more of a pitching dual as Jason Graham took to the mound. Jason was dominating the whole game giving up a single run while striking out nine. The Spartans record now stands at 4-4 as the return home to take on the Markham Pioneers on Sunday night.

June 5, 2006
Spartans Lose in Semi's
The Spartans won two games before losing at this year's Tillsonberg tournament. In game one the Spartans won a tight game 3 to 2 over the Woodslee Orioles, thanks to a great pitched game by Mark Sarson. In game two the Spartans took on the East York Bulldogs, the offense stole the show as the Spartans won 10 to 3, Rich Murer got the win. In the semi-final's the Spartans took on the Milton Red Sox, they lead most of the game until the Sox scored 4 and the Spartans could not come back and end up losing 4 to 1. The Spartans next action is on Saturday June 10th, as the team travels to Kendel to take on the Eagles in an afternoon double-header. Game one starts at noon.

May 30, 2006
Spartans Welcome More New Additions
The Spartans added more depth to their pitching staff with the additions of Mark Sarson and Bryan Smith. Mark comes from the Ottawa area and Bryan is playing again after a few years off. Both will see time on the mound and be counted on to eat up a lot of innings for the Spartans. Welcome aboard guys.

May 30, 2006
Spartans Win Home Opener
The Spartans snapped their three game losing streak by winning their home opener against the Port Hope Flyers 12-7. Pitching was all about debuts, as Bryan Smith, Mark Sarson, and Justin Recon all made their pitching debuts for the Spartans. Mark Sarson ending up with the win. Defensively the Spartans are still working out some of the off season rust but are starting to look better. Offensively the Spartans had 11 hits and were aided by control problems of the Port Hope pitching staff. Hi-lites of the night included a rocket by Rich Iantria off the left field fence and an even deeper rocket by Neil "Goulet" Blewett. The Spartans record now stands at 3-3 as they travel to Tillsonsberg for a tournament June 2nd thru 4th. The Spartans will be looking to better their showing last year where they lost in the consolation semi-finals.

May 28, 2006
Spartans Swept Away
The Spartans lost both games of a twilight double-header to the Oshawa Royals (7-3 & 3-2) Saturday night. Both games were hard fought affairs but the results were the same. Defensively the Spartans did not display their normal defense giving the Royals numerous unearned runs. Offensively the Spartans hit well but could not come up with the big hit when needed. Pitching was solid for the Spartans, Daryl Noble, Rich Murer, Pat Middleton, and Jason Graham all saw time on the mound and pitched well. No time to dwell on the losses for the Spartans as they get right back on the saddle Sunday May 28th for their home opener against the Port Hope Flyers, game time starts at 7:30pm.

May 25, 2006
Spartans Give One Away
The Spartans suffered their first loss of the season, losing 3-2 to the Markham Pioneers. Great pitching performances were put in by Nat Ogborne, Brad Binns, and Rich Murer who suffered the loss on an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth. The Spartan hitters were held in check most of the night by the Markham pitchers. The Spartans will look to rebound this Saturday when they travel to Oshawa to take on the Royals in a night time doubleheader, first game starts at 6:30pm.

May 24, 2006
Spartans Welcome Back 2 Players
The Spartans have added two fimilar faces to their line-up, welcoming back Pat Middleton and Trevor Robertson. Retirement did not sit will well for Pat and Trevor as the both got the itch to put back on the Spartans uniform after lengthy lay-offs. Both players will see time on the mound and Trevor will provide another bat in the line-up for the Spartans.

May 24, 2006
Spartans Chill Canadians
On a night where a football game should have been played, the Spartans and Canadians did their best to score like it was. The final score 16-10 as the Spartans outlasted the Canadians to open the season 2-0. The Spartans were lead defensively by Jason Graham and Tyler Sutton, both make it hard for the Canadians to get anything through on the left side of the infield. Offensively the team was lead by Rick Dwinnell (3 hits, 2 RBI's) and Shane Moore (3 hits, 3 RBI's). Pitching wise for the Spartans it was like the tale of two cities. The game was started by Pat Middleton, who shook off years of rust to pitch three scoreless innings. Jason Graham finished the game pitching the final 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win. In between were a few bad innings that I am sure Spartan pitchers Rich Murer and Trevor Robertson would love to have back. Next up for the Spartans is a trip to the Markham Fairgrounds, as the team takes on the always tough Markham Pioneers. Game time is 7:30pm Wednesday May 24th.

May 18, 2006
Spartans Win Opener In Extras
On a night when no one thought baseball could be played the Spartans travelled to Port Hope to take on the Flyers. The first six innings breezed by quickly, in a tight pitcher's dual. Then the Flyers finally scored as they put up a three spot in the bottom of the sixth, sending Rich Murer to the showers (actually right field as the Spartans only had nine players) in a very impressive Spartans debut. The Spartans responded with 2 runs in the seventh, one in the eigth, and one in the ninth to take a 4-3 lead. Unfortunately the Spartans could not hold the lead as the Flyers tied the game in the ninth, sending the game into extra innings. In which the Spartans responded with two more runs in the 10th to finish the game off. Along with Rich Murer, Daryl Noble(win) and Jason Graham (save) both saw time on the hill. Both were impressive in their season debuts, as the Spartans only gave up two earned runs for the game and had no walks. Defensively the Spartans had a little trouble, a few errors were made. Damon Draper had a very good game at 1st making several scoops to keep the Flyers off the base path's. Offensively the Spartans took a long time to shake off the cobwebs, but were lead by: Wally Kwan (2 hits, 2 walks), Shane Moore (2 hits including a shot off the wall, walk), Jason Graham (2 hits), Daryl Noble (2 key sacrafices), and Rich Murer starting the rally and showing the hitting form that made him a pitcher. The Spartans next action is on May 22nd as the Spartans travel to Whitby to take on the Canadians. Game time is 7:30pm at Portage park.

May 14, 2006

Spartans Almost Ready For Season
In what might be their final tune up before the regular season, the Spartans took on the Martingrove White Sox of the GTBL. This was strictly a tune up for the season for both squads. The Spartans once again displayed sound play in the field and the bats started to warm up. The high-light of the day was a solo home run by rookie Brad Binns. On the mound the trio of Daryl Noble, Neil Blewett, and Brad Binns kept the Sox in check. The Spartans are looking to get in another exhibition game or a few practices before next weekends season opener in Peterborough.

Ajax Loses Exhibition Opener
In order to prepare for the upcoming season the Spartans took part in an exhibition game with the Oshawa Dodgers. The early season rust was apparent on the hitting side as the Spartans managed only a handful of hits. The Spartans did manage enough offense to take a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the 7th. But a couple of walks, hits, and a big 2 out double gave the Dodgers a 6-5 win. Bright spots for the Spartans were the debuts of many new players and defensively the Spartans were in mid-season form. Ajax's next action will be on Saturday May 6th, details to follow. Ajax is hoping to get in enough practices and a few more exhibition games before the start of the regular season in Peterborough on May 14th, as the Spartans take on the River Dogs in an afternoon double-header

Ajax Spartans 2005 EOBA Champions!
The Ajax Spartans successfully defended their EOBA crown by winning their last four games of the 2005 EOBA tournament. The Spartans started out with a loss to regular season division leader Kingston Ponies 5 to 3. The game feature a grand slam by the Ponies in the first inning, the Spartans tried to fight back but fell short. Saturday was John Frederick's day, first he took the mound against the Whitby Canadians. He pitched a four hit shut-out as the Spartans won 2-0. The Spartans next game was against the Kendal Eagles, once again John Frederick was on the mound. John was on top of his game pitching a near perfect game (one error and a walk reached base) as John pitched a no-hitter. That set up another game with the Markham Pioneers in which should have been a great game and was. The Spartans sent Shane Moore to the mound with hopes of getting to the EOBA finals. Shane pitched six innings before handing the ball over to Jason Graham for the save as the Spartans were winning 7-4. The Spartans gave up one run and left the bases loaded in a scary bottom of the seventh. That left the Spartans to wait to see who their opponets would be in the finals. The Spartans would end up playing the Canadians again in the EOBA Finals. The Spartans scored 5 runs in the first inning and that was all Daryl Noble would need as he held the Canadians in check after giving up three runs in the first. The final score was 7 to 3 as the Spartans retained their EOBA crown. That brings to an end another ball season and hopefully a short winter. Stay tuned during the off-season for upcoming team events and fundraising.
