Late last night, WLA Commissioner Casey Cook approved a trade that will send New Westminster Salmonbellie goaltender Tyler Richards to Burnaby in exchange for the Lakers' first round picks in both 2014 and 2015.
Richards was drafted by the Bellies in 2008 and went to three consecutive Mann Cups with the team. In his rookie season, Richards won the Leo Nicholson Goaltender of the Year and Ed Bayley Rookie of the Year trophies. He was voted to WLA All-Star Teams in 2008, 2009 and 2011 and was named Goaltender of the Year again in 2011. After starting just one game in 2013, he took the rest of the season off.
Richards joins former teammates Ilija and Alex Gajic who were moved to Burnaby earlier in the off-season.
The first round of the 2014 WLA Draft of Graduating Juniors will be selected in the following order. - Coquitlam Adanacs (from Nanaimo - Cory Conway)
- New Westminster Salmonbellies
- Maple Ridge Burrards
- Coquitlam Adanacs
- New Westminster Salmonbellies (from Burnaby - Tyler Richards)
- Victoria Shamrocks
- Nanaimo Timbermen (from Langley - Lewis Ratcliff)
The draft is being planned for early February. Stay tuned for details.
