VANCOUVER, BC – Day Two of the National Championship Festival opened to beautiful weather and high energy at UBC Wolfson Fields. Provincial powerhouses Ontario and British Columbia continued to dominate the standings, and each division saw its share of high deficit scoring. U-18 Men Ontario 1 sits in the top spot in Tier 1, after the first team squeaked out a 15-13 win over BC1. Ontario 3, first place in Tier 2, continued their lopsided finishes, downing Saskatchewan 46-6, and player Mason Dingwall closed out the day as scoring leader with 30 points. Head coach, Danny Leeson, had some constructive criticism for his team as they look to improve further. “We’ve had two wins in a row with pretty big margins so we’re happy with that. In terms of our play, I think yesterday we had a big win (against New Brunswick) and today we took it a little easy, it was a little sloppy. So it’s back to a practice tomorrow and then onto our third game,” said Danny Leeson as he came off the field post-game. “I’m happy that we won, but not completely happy with the result. I think we could’ve played much better and we do have some things to work on and fine tune for our third game.” U-18 Women In Division A, Alberta unseated Saskatchewan from the top spot after besting their prairie rivals 17-0 to remain perfect in the tournament thus far. Not to be outdone by their male counterparts, Ontario’s women’s team continued their domination on Day Two of the festival, handing Manitoba a 71-0 loss and maintaining first place in Division B. Bayley Vachon, who racked up 15 points in the game from her hat trick, was happy with the way her team played. “The first couple games I thought we did pretty well. At first we kind of struggled a bit with our organization but we got that together. Our ball control improved, and we’ve been introduced to a lot of new things on our defense, and I think that’s beginning to work really well for us,” said Vachon from the sideline following the game. U-16 Men BC1 delivered a 75-0 loss to Newfoundland to stay lossless and first in Division A, while Ontario accomplished the same feat in Division B, albeit with a much less lopsided win of 14-7 over BC’s second squad. BC1’s Josh Thiel is the uncontested scoring leader, earning 44 points in two days from three tries and 13 converts. U-16 Women BC1 was the only team to hold on to a perfect record on Day Two, defeating Ontario 23-10 and commanding the scoring standings with three of their players tied for first, and two more filling out the top three. Alberta would replace Ontario at second following their 32-0 win over BC’s second team. U-14 Boys BC’s second team would deal Washington a 50-0 blowout in the first game of the day, with BC1 tying the Barbarians 5-5 to round out the province’s action on Day Two.
