The Bellingham Slam needed a record night on the glass from center Brian Dennis as they came from behind to defeat the King County Royals, 113-92, in an American Basketball Association contest Wednesday night at North Seattle Community College.
Dennis pulled down a franchise record 22 rebounds, to go along with a season-high 17 points, as the Slam shook off cold shooting in the first half to come back and take the lead in the third quarter. Bellingham trailed at halftime, 49-45.
The Slam came out on fire in the third quarter, opening with a 21-6 run in the first five minutes to take a 66-55 lead. Bellingham outscored King County 41-24 in the quarter and led 86-73 going into the final period.
The Slam never allowed King County a chance at a comeback, extending their lead to 16 halfway through the quarter and did not trail by less than 14 for the remainder of the game.
Forward Mike Parker led four Slam players in double figures with 28 points. He also pulled down a career-best 15 rebounds.
Guard Randy Green led King County with 24 points.
The same two teams will play in a re-match on Saturday in Bellingham. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Whatcom Pavilion.
