This past Monday Dec. 29th 2014 a pretty unbelievable feat was reached by one of our LBHA participants and one most if not all of you are familiar with.....Trevor Van Dyk just goal tended in his 500th start!
The LBHA has only been officially keeping stats since 2009 and during that time Trevor has started in 500 games. To accomplish such a feat, one needs to be good enough to not only start for one team but to start for numerous ones EVERY season. To compare him with some of the other top tier 1 goalies over that tenure you would see that Randy Kilborn (135), Scott Greaves (132), Rob Durno (120) and Ryan Ollson (110) combined still do not make up the amount of starts that Trevor Van Dyke has put in over the past 6 years.
Now this accomplishment does notmean Trevor is the best goalie the LBHA has to offer and I would never claim to say I know who that person is as we have many great tendy’s in our league. Mere game starts is something that a number of people can excel at and those above goalies are definitely of a caliber that would have numerous teams seek their expertise should they be willing to offer it but the thing is, almost all those goalies above have in common is that they basically all played for 1 team each season and also rarely played any winter league action with the exception of one. So not only do you have to have the ability to play in that many games over a 6 year period but you need to have the passion to play that many, be likable enough to play with that many different teams and personalities....you need to be healthy, dependable and available all at the same time! It’s a combination of all these things that truly make this accomplishment something to be in awe over.
There is some goalies who have shared the same attributes as Trevor over past seasons as we have seen goalies such as Brandon McNeilly and Mike Lemanski both play 175 games each, Anthony Krieger played in 210 games, Frank Kort play in 250 games and last but not least we have seen Vince Pelley, who has played in over 275 games between the pipes. All really ood goalies! However out of all of those goalies, Vince Pelley is the next closest net minder in games played to Trevor and he is still 225 games short of the mark that Trevor is at right now.
Now if everything I have mentioned thus far fails to seem impressive to you, I would like to present arguably the most impressive information to support Trevor's great accomplishment......A goaltender can be and do all of the things I have already mentioned and leaving it at that would still be pretty damn amazing in my mind but to do all of this and consistently win while doing so is almost something else all on it’s own! One could fill in and play goal as many times as humanly possible and not care at all about thier record as they just loved to play, should the willingness & opportunities be there as they have been for Trevor but to care enough to give his all in all of those appearances regardless of the tier and the team he was playing on can truly only be told by his statistics. In the 500 games Trevor has started he has been remarkabley consistent winning 338 while only losing 135 and then tying the remaining 25. That means Trevor is winning over 2.5 times more than he is losing and over that amount of games with over 40 teams I think that is pretty damn amazing!
Trevor’s passion and ability over the years are something we hopefully get to enjoy for many years to come as he has been a true testimate of what the LBHA is all about and all who have had the pleasure of playing with and/or against him should feel honored not only know Trevor the person/goalie/team mate/opponent but to also know that they have played a small roll in him reaching this milestone. I know Trevor values all of you and this league (LBHA) as he has clearly attested to......500 times and counting!
Congratulations Trevor, we are glad to have you on our side
