Roller Hockey Round-Up for Week of May 8th
- Submitted by
In this week’s Sportime Bethpage Roller Hockey round-up we focus on an exciting “Rec” East division battle, a wild final few minutes in a matchup between team Yohe and the KJ Farrells and key late season victories by the Varsity Clowns and Assisted Living.

“Rec” East Division: Back Lot Boyz 4 – Electric Mayhem 3  F/SO
On Monday, the two top teams in the East division faced off in a much anticipated matchup. The game itself managed to live up to the hype, as the two teams ended up needing a shootout to determine a winner. In the end it was the Back Lot Boyz that left the rink victorious, as their goaltender Nick Ceriello stopped all of the three attempts he faced in the shootout. Joe Kennedy, the East division’s top scorer this season, registered the shootout’s lone goal for the Boyz.

With time winding down in the second period, the Back Lot Boyz trailed 3-2, and appeared to be in danger of suffering their first regulation loss of the spring. But with 6:56 left, Keith McNichol was able to tie the game up for the Boyz. Nick Ceriello also made 21 saves in regulation in the matchup, while opposing netminder Ryan Smith stopped 20 shots for the Mayhem.

The Back Lot Boyz are now in full control of the East Division, up four points on second place Electric Mayhem. They have won six games in a row.

“C” Silver Division: Yohe 7 – KJ Farrells 6  F
Team Yohe got back on the winning track on Wednesday night, scoring two late goals to defeat the KJ Farrells. The game was tied at 5-5, with 2:11 left in regulation, when Brian Yohe scored to put team Yohe ahead. Then with 41 second later Vincent Previti scored his fourth goal of the game, cushioning Yohe’s lead to two goals. Previti now has 12 goals on the season, which is tied for second most in the Silver division.

Charlie Liotta scored for the KJ Farrells with 15.3 seconds remaining to pull his team within one, but it proved not to be enough. Will Keagins made 22 saves for Yohe, earning the victory in net. Nick Casazza had three goals and an assist in a losing effort for the Farrells. He now ranks tenth in the league in points.

Team Yohe is now back over the .500 mark, and sits in third place in the Silver division. They only trail the Pluggers and Born2Puck.com in the standings.

“Rec” Bronze Division: Varsity Clown 4 – Milf Hunters 3  F
The Milf Hunters staged a late comeback attempt Tuesday night against the Varsity Clowns, but came up one goal short of forcing overtime. The Varsity Clowns were able to hang on for their second consecutive win, behind a 23-save performance from netminder Anthony Senatore.

Mike Hoenigmann, Marc Castro, James Milner and John Votta all lit the lamp for the Clowns in this contest. The Milf Hunters got a pair of clutch goals from Brendan Sullivan in the game’s final five minutes. Sullivan now has 14 goals in eight games this spring.

With the win, Varsity Clowns remained tied in points with third place Hatrick Swayze, with each club having 12. The Brews Brothers and The Great White Buffalo continue to battle it out for first in the Bronze division.

“Rec” North Division: Assisted Living 6 – Team Iceland 5  F
Two goals apiece from Sean Munro and Rob Bischoff powered team Assisted Living to a big late season win over Team Iceland. The game was tied at four about halfway through the second period, when Chris Vilchek and Pat Cappetti each found the back of the net for Assisted Living to put them up by two.

Joe Perino cut Assisted Living’s lead to 6-5 with 5:32 remaining in regulation, when he scored his North division leading 14th goal of the spring. He finished the game with a hat trick, while teammate Joe Giancone ended the evening with two goals.

Both Team Iceland and Assisted Living now have ten points this season, as does Team Cobra Kai. All three teams trail first-place ATM in the standings by two points.
