Dek Hockey Round-Up for Week of May 8th
- Submitted by
In this week’s Sportime Bethpage Dek hockey round-up we focus on an overtime thriller between the Chiefs and CTP, another big win for the Hard Working Americans and team Sniper District’s continued strong play.

“C” East Division: Chiefs 3 – CTP 2  F/OT
The Chiefs picked up a crucial late-season victory over team CTP on Monday, thanks to a game-winning overtime goal from Thomas Kenny. Kenny scored with just 1:46 left in the extra period, to earn his team an extra point in the standings. Goaltender Ronald Kohler helped backstopped the Chiefs to the victory, making 16 saves.

This contest remained close the entire way. With 6:47 remaining in the second period, Brian Mentz scored to put CTP up 2-1. It was Mentz’s second goal of the contest, and fifth on the season. Then with only 4:11 left in regulation, Guthrie Taber found the back of the net to tie things up for the Chiefs. Taber has a been a major offensive contributor for the Chiefs all spring long, and ranks third in the East division in points.

Despite the loss, CTP still managed to earn another point, and holds a two-point advantage on the Chiefs in the standings. Both teams are competing with the Baymen for the top spot in the East division.

“B” North Division: Hard Working Americans 4 – Badgers 3  F
After pulling off an upset win over the Bingers last week, the Hard Working Americans earned another unlikely win on Monday. The Americans scored twice in the second period to take down the first-place Badgers. Dan Novelli scored the go-ahead goal with 11:05 remaining in regulation, completing his hat trick in the game. Novelli is now fifth in the league in scoring this season in the North division.

HWA’s Tom Lepage was once again a difference maker in net, stopping 22 out of the 25 shots he faced. Joe Jacaruso finished the night with a goal and an assist for the Badgers.

The Badgers still sit in first-place in the North division, but are now tied with the Starlighters in points. The Starlighters defeated the third-place Bingers on Wednesday. The Hard Working Americans still sit in last in the division, but have certainly showcased their potential in recent weeks.

“C” West Division: EZ2-4U 5 – YNOTUS 0  F
A pair of first-period goals from William Mallon helped spark team EZ2-4U to a victory over YNOTUS on Wednesday. Daniel Mallon would also light the lamp twice for EZ2-4U, helping the team pick up their sixth win of the spring season.

In net, goaltender Tom Lepage was perfect. He stopped all of the 14 shots he faced. Following his two-goal effort, William Mallon now has 10 goals on the season, tying him for the third most in the West Division. Daniel Mallon has six goals on the spring. Steve Vasquez was tested often in net for YNOTUS, and made 25 saves in his team’s loss.

EZ2-4U is now in second place in the West division, three points behind first-place Grey Ocean. Team YNOTUS currently sits in seventh place, but only two points out of fourth position in the division.

“C” Central Division: Sniper District 6 – Rabid Squirrels 3  F
On Monday, Sniper District picked up its fourth win in a row, doubling up the Rabid Squirrels. Two goals from Joe Mucci got things rolling for Sniper District in the game’s opening period. Mucci is now fourth in the Central division in scoring.

The Rabid Squirrels made a push in the second period, with goals from Don Kealey and Kevin Murphy. But the District was able to hang on for the victory, powered by late strikes from Wally Geis and Ed Hoschler. Jon Krolick mades 12 saves in net for Sniper District to earn the victory.

Team Sniper District has put together an impressive season, losing just once in regulation all spring. However, they still sit three point behind the Garbage Cans, who remain perfect on the year.
