Burlington's Dave Burnett passes away

It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the sudden passing of Dave Burnett. Dave was stricken by an acute pancreatitis attack on March 30th and succumbed to this on April 2.

Dave has left an indelible mark on the Centaurs as a player, coach, administrator, mentor and friend.

Recognizing the impact Dave has had on the Burlington Centaurs and the rugby community across the province and country, the family would like you to join them this Saturday, April 9, at Sherwood Forest Park, as the Burlington Centaurs will host a reception celebrating Dave's life. This to take place from 1-4pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the National Pancreas foundation would be appreciated by the family.

An online registry can be found at Smiths Funeral Home for condolences.

Originally from Gloucester, England,  David, who was 70, made his home in southern Ontario and was instrumental in growing the sport of rugby through his tireless work as a coach, administrator and general volunteer.  He was a key member of the Niagara Thunder of the Rugby Canada Super League, helping shepherd that team to the championship game in 2007, where the Saskatchewan Prairie Fire prevailed 28-12.

David was also a Past President of the former RCSL.

During his playing career in Canada, David played with the Brantford Harlequins, Hamilton Hornets and the Burlington Centaurs. David was Past President of Burlington RFC, and was the current secretary. He also represented Eastern Canada at scrum half.

David was still an active player with Niagara Old Boys and also a  Current coach at Waterdown High School.

Former Rugby Ontario and current Rugby Canada Board member Gordon Sneddon was shocked by the news, saying, "Dave's sudden loss is immense both for his family and the rugby community throughout Canada.

"Dave's passion and desire to improve the sport in Canada was second to none. He was a great friend and mentor. He will be sorely missed."

Rugby Canada CEO Graham Brown spoke warmly of all the various things Burnett did for Canadian Rugby.

"He was the epitome of the rugby man," said Brown from Rugby Canada's Richmond Hill, ON office. "Everything he did was with passion and attention to detail, and he did it with enthusiasm and commitment to the game.

"Dave's passing will leave a big hole in the sport in Ontario and he will be missed."
