Nanaimo is the second-largest city on Vancouver Island, after the provincial capital of Victoria. One of the longest shorelines in Canada can be found here but there is also a vibrant downtown entertainment and shopping area that is popular with locals and tourists alike.

The population of Nanaimo is about 84,000 with the pulp and paper industry accounting for a considerable chunk of the local economy. With an urban setting and proximity to outdoor pursuits such as hiking, skiing and golf, Nanaimo offers something for all tastes.

Nanaimo is served by three newspapers (Nanaimo Daily News, Nanaimo News Bulletin and Harbour City Star), and radio stations CHWF-FM (The Wolf) and CKWV-FM (The Wave). Vancouver Island University is also located in Nanaimo giving the city a college-town appeal.

The city is also famous for the Nanaimo Bar - you can actually take a self-guided tour to sample different versions of this popular dessert treat.
